The Ministry of Human Resource Development will be releasing safety guidelines to be followed whenever classroom learning is resumed.

With the  Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) setting up new safety guidelines to be followed once schools and colleges reopen, new seating matrix, staggered classes, different mess and library rules, revamped hostels and canteens, could be part of students' socially distant lives.

On March 16, the Universities, schools, and other educational institutions across the country were closed as a preventive measure to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

As per the HRD ministry, whenever the schools and colleges in the country will resume classes, proper social distancing norms will have to be followed to ensure safety of the student.

"Before the schools and colleges will be reopened, the guideline will also be shared with states so they can prepare accordingly. The guideline will include a checklist and recommended measures to ensure students' and staff safety. Districts will be tasked with the implementation of the guidelines and certain spaces on the campuses will have to be revamped to ensure social distancing," an official said.

HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' had also deliberated upon the issue of safety guidelines in a meeting with state education ministers last week.

For schools, from the suspension of morning assemblies and sports activities in the playground to following certain seating matrix in the school bus and classrooms, do's and dont's in the cafeteria area and washrooms could be part of guidelines with making masks as a mandatory part of school uniform. For residential schools, guidelines will detail social distancing norms to be followed in mess and hostels.

Several Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are also working on finding out ways that students can follow to maintain social distancing norms, including restricting entry of visitors, classes in shifts, and staggered laboratory timings. As per UGC recommendations, semester exams can be conducted in July either online or offline.

On Wednesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had released guidelines, stating that the academic session for freshers may begin from September while for already enrolled students it can be started from August.

The death toll due to the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 1,159 and the number of cases climbed to 35,084 in the country on Friday, the Union Health Ministry said.
