Delhi University Implements NEP 2020: All UG Courses of 4-Year Duration with Multiple Entry-Exit Options
New Programs in MA in Journalism in Hindi and English departments; B.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine Technology at Army Hospital
The University of Delhi (DU) is fully adopting the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with all undergraduate (UG) courses now structured as 4-year programs offering students the flexibility of multiple entry and exit points. This development, along with the introduction of new academic programs and infrastructure enhancements, was discussed during a recent meeting of DU’s Executive Council (EC), underscoring the university’s commitment to modernizing its academic framework.
All UG Courses Now 4 Years with Flexible Exit Options
During the EC meeting, DU Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta provided clarity on the structure of UG programs under NEP 2020. “In NEP 2020, every UG course is of 4 years, but the students have the option of multiple exit and multiple entry,” Dr. Gupta stated. He further explained, “They can leave the course whenever they want. In the earlier education policy, students did not get anything if they left the 3-year course midway, but the good provision in NEP 2020 is that there is a provision for students to get a certificate to degree if they leave the course midway.”
This framework allows students to exit at various stages—earning a certificate after one year, a diploma after two years, a degree after three years, or a degree with honors/research after four years—while also permitting re-entry to continue their education later. The policy aims to reduce dropout rates, accommodate diverse student needs, and provide recognized qualifications for partial completion, marking a significant shift from the previous rigid 3-year UG structure.
Infrastructure Development with HEFA Loan
During Zero Hour, Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh addressed infrastructure developments, responding to queries about the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) loan. “DU has to return only 10% of the HEFA loan in 10 years. This is a good scheme,” he said. He added that the funds are being used to construct new buildings and enhance infrastructure, which will provide improved facilities for students, supporting DU’s growing academic demands.
Curriculum Updates and New Academic Programs
The EC approved the curriculum for various departments and programs, following recommendations from the DU Academic Council meeting on May 10, 2025. The approved curricula align with the revised Undergraduate Course Framework-2022 and Postgraduate Course Framework-2024, transitioning from the existing Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)/Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) to updated examination schemes, ensuring compliance with NEP 2020 guidelines.
University of Delhi offers a four-year BTech course through Faculty of Technology (FoT). The university offers BTech to students who have completed Class 12. Below are the BTech specialisations available at DU:
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
DU is also introducing new programs to expand its academic offerings, including an MA in Journalism and a B.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine Technology (a specialized nursing-related course). The MA in Journalism will now be offered through the Hindi and English departments. An expert committee, led by Prof. Shri Prakash Singh, Director of South Delhi Campus, has been formed to launch a two-year Postgraduate Hindi Journalism Course, while a separate committee will oversee the start of a Postgraduate in English Journalism program under the English Department. Vice Chancellor Prof. Singh had previously announced this expansion during the inauguration of a studio at the Journalism Department on DU’s South Campus.
B.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine Technology at Army Hospital
The B.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine Technology, a new nursing-related program under the Faculty of Medical Sciences, will commence this academic session at Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi Cantt. The course, spanning three years with an optional one-year internship, will be housed under the Department of Radiology. It aims to train students to work alongside nuclear medicine physicians, equipping them with skills to manage daily operations in nuclear medicine departments, such as administering radiopharmaceuticals and imaging bodily structures.
Eligibility is tailored for personnel in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). Candidates must have completed six years of service, hold a good service record, and have passed their Higher Secondary Examination with at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Botany & Zoology), and English. If seats remain vacant, eligibility will extend to Medical Assistants from the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy based on equivalent criteria, ensuring accessibility within the military medical community.
