Delhi High Court while hearing the matter regarding violations of rules by candidates campaigning during Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, issued order that no victory procession in the campus or any other area shall be taken out.
Students of Delhi University head to the polls today to elect a new Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), with promises on campus safety, hostel facilities, free Wi-Fi, and gender representation dominating campaigns. The contest between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), and the SFI-AISA Left alliance has turned this year’s election into a race centred on everyday student concerns rather than loud rallies.
What the Student Groups Promised
Aryan Maan (ABVP Presidential Candidate): “The ABVP’s capable leadership has always been trusted by students of Delhi University. This year, we are determined to ensure adequate sports facilities and nutrition, campus accessibility audits for students with special needs, and free Wi-Fi access across DU.”
Ravi Pandey (NSUI Representative):“Our teams are actively engaging with students across North Campus and various colleges, sharing diaries that highlight our agenda on accommodation and housing, campus infrastructure, transportation, social justice, and other key student issues.”
NSUI has also promised a monthly allowance of ₹5,000 for disabled students and greater representation for linguistic and North-Eastern minorities in university committees.
SFI-AISA Alliance: Their manifesto pledges to fight fee hikes, make Internal Complaints Committees elected, set up gender sensitisation cells in all colleges, and introduce menstrual leave for women students.
DUSU Elections: Recent controversies
Bond Controversy: Delhi University has come out with a new rule requiring election candidates to deposit a refundable ₹1 lakh bond has drawn protests from candidates. ABVP’s Delhi state secretary Sarthak Sharma called it “undemocratic and exclusionary, preventing ordinary students from participating.”
Campaign Conduct: With tighter enforcement of Lyngdoh Committee rules, this year’s campaigns saw fewer noisy rallies and defacement. Instead, the debate has shifted to issues like safety, transport relief, and hostel availability.
Student Voices
A third-year Kirori Mal College student, Mayank Singh said: “This year manifestos actually talk about Wi-Fi, hostels and safety. We’ll see if they keep these promises, but at least these issues are being discussed.”

Delhi HC: No victory procession
Issuing order regarding DUSU elections, Delhi High Court while hearing the matter regarding violations of rules by candidates campaigning for the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, the court issued order that no victory procession in the campus or any other area shall be taken out.
“A common concern is expressed that after counting is over, winning candidates take out victory procession which as per past experience becomes very difficult for the police and DU authorities,” HC observed.
University’s Appeal
The university has urged candidates and supporters to avoid freebies, unlawful outings, vehicles without number plates, and excessive spending. Colleges have been directed to strictly enforce rules and ensure peaceful voting with police support.
From DUSU to Top Posts: Political Legacies
The importance of DUSU goes beyond the campus. Several national and state leaders began their journey here:
| Name | DUSU Role | Later Positions |
|---|---|---|
| Arun Jaitley | President (ABVP), 1974 | Union Finance Minister |
| Ajay Maken | President (NSUI), 1985 | Union Minister, MP |
| Rekha Gupta | President (1996–97) | Current Chief Minister of Delhi |
| Vijay Goel | President (ABVP), 1977 | Former Union Minister |
| Anil Chaudhary | President (NSUI) | Congress Chief |
The DUSU election outcome will show whether gender representation, inclusion, and student welfare dominate student politics or whether traditional rivalries continue to decide results. For most students, though, the demand is simple: better facilities, safer campuses, and leaders who deliver beyond slogans.
