During the meeting, the need for adopting a transparent, accountable, objective, method-driven system of assessment, accreditation and ranking of HEIs through a technology platform was discussed.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan held a meeting on bringing transparency and accountability in the accreditation and ranking of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) which accredits colleges and universities is facing allegations of irregularities related to its functioning and accreditation process.

Union Education Minister chaired a brainstorming session on the latest developments in the present accreditation and ranking systems with his deputy, Minister of State, Dr Subhas Sarkar that includes transformative reforms to strengthen HEIs across the country. The meeting was attended by the Former ISRO chairman, and senior officials from the University Grants Commission, AICTE.

During the meeting, the need for adopting a transparent, accountable, objective, method-driven system of assessment, accreditation and ranking of HEIs through a technology platform was discussed. Earlier this month, the chairperson of NAAC’s executive committee, Bhushan Patwardhan resigned after repeatedly demanding an independent inquiry into the functioning of the NAAC.

Focusing on ease of doing business, varied parameters for different category of institutions was deliberated upon, aligning with the vision of NEP 2020, and aiding in making informed choices of institutions/ program by students. Online suggestions from the public domain started.
