Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will inaugurate the Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam 2025 on July 29 to mark 5 years of NEP 2020. The summit will highlight progress in higher and school education reforms, digital learning, ABC, GER goals, and upcoming initiatives.
The Ministry of Education will organise the Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam (ABSS) 2025 on July 29 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi to mark the fifth anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The event will be inaugurated by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and will serve as a national platform to reflect on the progress made so far and chart the course for the future of education in India.
The Samagam will focus on key themes including achieving 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by 2030 by reimagining secondary education, integrating Indian languages into mainstream education, leveraging Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies in classrooms, strengthening Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), and enhancing employability and inclusivity in curriculum design. The event is expected to witness the launch of several initiatives and include inaugurations and foundation stone-laying of academic institutions, along with thematic panel discussions and multimedia exhibitions.
Significant strides have been made in the implementation of NEP 2020 across higher education and school education in the past five years. In higher education, 170 universities have adopted the National Credit Framework (NCrF), while 2,469 institutions have onboarded the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC), issuing over 32 crore ABC IDs and 2.36 crore APAAR IDs. Multiple entry-exit options have been implemented in 153 universities, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) has permitted biannual admissions starting this academic year.
Digital learning infrastructure has expanded with 116 institutions offering 1,149 programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and 107 institutions offering 544 online programmes. The SWAYAM platform now allows up to 40% credit transfer, and 388 universities have integrated it into their academic systems. More than 13,000 higher education institutions have implemented the SAMARTH platform for digital governance, while ONOS (One Nation One Subscription) has provided access to nearly 13,000 e-journals in 6,300 institutions. Over 2.5 lakh faculty members have been trained under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme through 3,950 training sessions covering topics like AI, cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, and mental health.
In the school education sector, NEP 2020 has been implemented in 14.72 lakh schools, involving 98 lakh teachers and 24.8 crore students, as per UDISE+ 2023-24. Government schools have shown marked improvement in learning outcomes, as reflected in PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 and ASER 2024 reports. The ULLAS adult education initiative has reached 2.6 crore learners with the help of 42 lakh volunteer teachers, making 1.7 crore people newly literate. Ladakh has emerged as the first fully literate administrative unit under ULLAS, followed by Mizoram, Goa, and Tripura.
Further efforts in assessment and monitoring include large-scale surveys like NAS 2021 and SEAS, covering lakhs of students. The PM SHRI scheme has been expanded to include 13,076 model schools, while the PM POSHAN initiative now covers Bal Vatikas and supports Nutrition Gardens in 6.28 lakh schools. The SWAYAM PRABHA DTH platform has scaled up to 200 channels with over 92,000 videos in 30 languages.
At the ABSS 2025, various panel discussions will cover key areas such as promoting Bharatiya Bhasha, utilising AI for school and higher education, strengthening secondary education with a focus on skills and employment, and cultivating young researchers through initiatives like PMRF and Anusandhan. The event will not only showcase exemplary practices from across India but also set the tone for accelerated reforms as NEP enters its sixth year.
