The Nagaland University's Basic Science undergraduate programme will align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in order to offer greater academic opportunities for the students.

Nagaland University is introducing a new undergraduate program in Basic Sciences in the current academic year. The UG programme in Basic Science will be backed with a Multidisciplinary Research Centre to bring additional coursework in the area of study. The new programmes correspond with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and highlight the university's commitment to extending educational possibilities for the students. 

As Nagaland's only central university, it intends to promote Basic Sciences education by first offering three- and four-year undergraduate degrees in Botany, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology.  Over time, the university will eventually introduce courses namely, PhD courses in all sciences and social sciences, Integrated postgraduate courses in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology, and All sciences and social sciences postgraduate + PhD integrated PhD programmes, as reported by India Today. 

The Vice Chancellor of the university highlighted their aim to promote research and training while promoting fundamental science in different areas from material to life sciences on a multidisciplinary platform. He further highlighted the university's objective to eliminate rigid academic obstacles and offer new learning opportunities to students. The university will additionally offer unique combinations of subjects that include different entry and exit points, as well as re-entry opportunities for the students. 

The academic structure will have an adaptive structure that will allow students to move effortlessly between higher education institutions, due to the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC).  The ABC system will allow for the acknowledgement, accumulation, disposal, and reclamation of academic credits, hence improving higher education affordability and availability.
