Pune Universities to Implement Bi-annual Admissions Following UGC Guidelines

Students who miss the July intake deadline can register for the January session rather than waiting another six months to enroll in their desired programme. 

Universities in Pune are planning to conduct bi-annual admissions in accordance with the UGC latest guidelines, allowing universities like IGNOU to start the admission process twice a year, where universities can admit students based on the availability of infrastructure, faculty and support system. Instead of having to wait another six months to enroll in their preferred program, students who miss the July intake deadline will be able to sign up for the January session.

Several private universities here stated that the admissions that will be conducted in the July-August and January-February sessions of the academic year will require to optimise the utilisation of infrastructure and provide a chance to student to enrol for their desired programme without waiting for another year for admissions. Where public universities in the city may take time to implement the changes, private universities aim to implement the changes by the January 2026 session. 

As per the University Grants Commission (UGC) notification in the gazette, universities like Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) may start the admission process twice a year. The universities can admit students based on the availability of infrastructure, faculty and support systems and go on to start the admission process based on UGG rules clarified in the notification. It also mentioned that higher education institutions should carefully prepare this plan with the approval of institutional statutory bodies.
