UGC Invites Suggestions, Feedback On Guidelines for Short-Term Skill Development Courses in HEIs

The University Grants Commission (UGC) approved guidelines for introducing short-term courses in higher educational institutes (HEIs) to bridge the skill gap and increase productivity of students at the workplace. In this regard, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited suggestions, comments and feedback from the stakeholders on the guidelines for short-term skill development courses in HEIs.

Stakeholders can submit their suggestions, comments and feedback at the email ID: feedback.ugcguidelines@gmail.com. The last date to submit suggestions/feedback is January 20, 2024. UGC said, the initiative aligns with the goal of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes a shift away from traditional, memorization-based learning to a more comprehensive and holistic educational approach.

The UGC has urged higher educational institutions to provide brief skill development programs covering a wide array of areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, IoT (Internet of Things), Industrial IoT, Smart Cities, Data Science, Analytics, Cloud Computing, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Extended Reality, Cyber Security, Digital Forensics, and 5G Connectivity, among various others.

According to UGC Chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar, "Individuals who have cleared the 10+2/Senior Secondary Examination or its equivalent, and are eligible for admission to any undergraduate program at the HEI, can enroll in these short-term skill development courses. These courses, ranging from 3 to 6 months, will be credit-linked and structured using a credit mechanism by the institute."

Additionally, the UGC has recommended partnering with pertinent Sector Skills Councils/Awarding Bodies and industries to guarantee current content, placement prospects, funding initiatives, and the credibility of courses.
