CLAT UG Result Hearing LIVE (Begins): SC directs Consortium to revise CLAT Merit List, Flags error in Question Paper

The court has sought a response from the Centre on the possibility of establishing a permanent mechanism for conducting the examination, akin to NEET and other national-level entrance tests, in order to ensure consistency and serve the best interests of students.

According to the general reservation criteria, the allocation of seats is as follows:​

• Scheduled Castes (SC): 15% of seats​
• Scheduled Tribes (ST): 7.5% of seats​
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) - Non-Creamy Layer: 27% of seats​
• Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): 10% of seats​
• Persons with Disabilities (PwD): 5% of seats (horizontal reservation across all categories)​
• Women Candidates: Some NLUs offer a certain percentage of seats reserved for female candidates.​
• State Domicile: A certain percentage of seats are reserved for candidates who are domiciled in the state where the NLU is located.​
• NRI/NRI Sponsored Candidates: Some NLUs have a specific number of seats reserved for NRI or NRI-sponsored candidates.​

The CLAT 2025 counselling process will begin only after the Supreme Court delivers its verdict. Until the court issues a final order, the counselling timeline remains uncertain, and candidates will have to wait for further instructions from the Consortium.

Enter your registered mobile number and password in the login section.​

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance exam conducted for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs. It serves as the primary admission gateway to the 24 participating National Law Universities (NLUs) across India. Through CLAT, thousands of aspirants secure admission into prestigious integrated LLB and LLM courses. The exam also plays a role in recruitment for certain public sector undertakings (PSUs) and other institutions that accept CLAT scores. The ongoing CLAT 2025 result hearing has brought added attention to the exam’s significance and fairness in legal education access.

Candidates can download their CLAT 2025 result and scorecard by following these simple steps:

  Go to consortiumofnlus.ac.in.
• Login to Your Account:

Use your registered mobile number and password to log in to the CLAT 2025 portal.

• Access the Result:
  After logging in, click on the link that says “Score Card” or “Result”.
• View and Download:
  Your CLAT 2025 scorecard will appear on the screen. Download and save the PDF for future use.
• Print a Copy (Optional):
  It’s recommended to keep a printed copy for the counselling and admission process.

The counselling fee for CLAT 2025 is INR 30,000 for general/OBC category, and INR 20,000, for SC/ST/OBC/BC/EWS/PWD categories. The CLAT counselling fee can only be paid in online mode on the official website of the law entrance exam. The counselling fee candidate need to pay as a token amount against their allotted seat to secure it. After this, candidates will be required to pay the remaining fee against their course, which is the tuition fee+ non-refundable charges+ refundable charges and more. In case, candidates choose to withdraw / exit from their allotted after they freeze/ float, and have paid the counselling fee, then they will get a refund of their amount after deduction of INR 5,000 from it. However, full amount will be refunded only in case when the candidate did not freeze/ float their allotted seat.

Candidates must note that the Consortium of NLUs conduct the complete CLAT Counselling Process online on its official website. The CLAT 2025 Exam official website is consortiumofnlus.ac.in. 

The major difference between CLAT 2025 ranks and marks is: 

• Marks are consolidated scores obtained in the CLAT exam
• Ranks are positioned in each category based on marks and tie-breaking criteria

Therefore, it becomes essential for a candidate to score well in the CLAT exam, to get a higher rank in the merit list. Candidates must do CLAT marks versus ranks analysis to understand how the score they have secured can be converted into CLAT 2025 merit rank. CLAT marks versus rank analysis will help candidates get an idea about the expected ranks as per their scores. 

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) will conduct CLAT 2025 counselling in online mode. The whole counselling process for CLAT is conducted in online mode. Candidates have to register online to participate in the counselling. Eligible candidates who qualify the exam can register on the official website for the counselling. After that, they have to pay fee to complete the registration process. After registration, candidates have to declare choices for college and course seeking admission into. 

During CLAT counselling, candidates will be provided the option to choose from three options; i.e. freeze, float and exit. Candidates can understand all options below:

Freeze Option: In case a candidate is happy with the seat alloted to him/her then they can freeze it. With this they won't be allowed to appear in the further rounds of counselling. If a candidate freezes the seat, it means that the candidate is confirming their seat at the allotted National Law University (NLU).

Float Option: If a candidate is not happy with the seat allotted to them and wants to pariticpate in further rounds of counselling they can select the float option. This option mean that candidate is accepting the seat allotted to them but is willing to pariticpate in further rouns of counselling for a better college. Candidate must note that in case they choose the float option and is allotted a seat in the next round then the seat allotted in the previous round will be forfeited.

Exit Option: During the counselling process, if a candidate feels that they don't want to pariticipate further, then they may choose an option to exit. If they choose this option, it means that they are withdrawing from the counselling process and they will not be considered for further round of counselling. 

CLAT 2025 Invite List refers to the list of qualifying candidates who are eligible to participate in the counselling process. The CLAT 2025 invite list will be declared by the Consortium after the announcement of the CLAT 2025 merit list.

The Supreme Court, in a significant ruling today, flagged multiple errors in the CLAT-UG 2025 question paper and ordered a revision of the merit list. The decision came while hearing petitions challenging a prior Delhi High Court judgment on the exam.

Sr Adv Gopal S: My suggestion is that I am also appearing in Shamnad Basheer case.. 2015 case. BCI and Union are a party to it. Let the same be tagged with the same. 

SC: Taking into consideration the order we have passed, let it be treated as a suo motu case concerning #CLAT.

The Delhi HC was supposed to begin the hearing of the petitions related to the CLAT PG 2025 on May 2, 2025. The matters, which were scheduled for consideration earlier, did not come up for hearing on April 21, and have since been adjourned to the next available date. A batch of petitions challenging certain questions and the evaluation process of the CLAT PG 2025 exam had been filed before the court, seeking clarity and relief for affected candidates. With Delhi HC not taking up the matter on May 2, 2025, it is likely that the hearing will begin next week.

Justice Gavai: We find that for answering the question 115, the candidate has to undergo a detailed mathematical analysis which is not expected in an objective test. Thus we direct deletion of question 115. The perusal of 116 will show that it is dependent on information in 115 and thus the same is directed to be deleted. Thus we set aside HC direction to give marks to all students who attempted 115 and 116. We find that on account of confusion in material... many have not answered the said question. thus we direct deletions of both questions 115 and 116.

Justice Gavai: we hold that question 88 also had to be deleted. thus we direct the same to be deleted.  now we are left with questions 115 and 116.

Justice Gavai: for question 78, the division bench has rejected the contention to delete the question. we are in agreement with hc and answer key C is the correct option. the material provided for in question 85 and 88 are thus .... consortium has itself deleted question 85... 86 and 87.

Justice Gavai: then on question 77: some respondents have stated that without prior legal knowledge the said question cannot be opted correctly. it is seen that if a student applies reason and logic it can be found out what is void contract, what is voidable contract ... we hold that answer key B will only be correct if no prior legal knowledge is needed. thus we direct consortium to give marks to those students who have selected option B

Justice Gavai: consortium says use of word citizens is not correct. we are AMAZED AT THE STAND TAKEN BY CONSORTIUM who are heads in field of legal education. the top court has held state and citizen both are under the obligation to maintain the ecological balance. we thus hold answer key C is correct. thus we direct all students to be given marks for C and D. All who attempted answer A or B be given negative marks.

Justice Gavai: Question 56 is with regard to the environmental issues. The material on the basis of which it needs to be answered is thus..... it could be seen from the answers that.. answer key no.A... fundamental duty to protect the environment is on state only.. is wrong... according to consortium answer key is correct one which says state has the right to maintain ecological balance''' no doubt by logic it is correct.. but it is to also see answer key c which shows it is both on states and citizens

SC: The court is left with no option. It is clear that several questions were found unsuitable. HC has therefore passed an order wrt various questions. In present petition, we are only concerned with 6 questions (56,77,78,88,115,116). Q.56 is wrt environmental issues.

 At the outset we must express our anguish at the casual manner in which the Consortium has been framing questions for CLAT exams which involves career aspirations of lakhs of students. We have been shown the earlier judgment of this court ..though that judgment was passed in 2018..no further steps taken by union or BCI. We therefore direct notice to be issued to union ( MHRD).

J Gavai: 115 we are deleting

Gopal S: 116 there is a fundamental issue. There are 4 sets of papers, having same questions. Q.116 was copy-pasted across all sets...If 115 is going, 116 should go across the board

Rao: 116 is an error by us

The revised CLAT 2025 scorecard will include key exam-related details such as the candidate’s name, father’s name, roll number, application number, category (General, OBC, SC, ST, etc.), individual section scores, overall score, All India Rank (AIR), and category-wise rank.

Justice Gavai to consortium: Are you expecting students to come with calculator? I have been 40 years on bench.. how will 16-17 year old answer this. Chalo question 115 also goes

Sr Adv Gopal S: If question 115 going then 116 has to also go

Consortium: No one is asking students to understand the contract act. It is for them to analyse the situation. The question 77 is not out of syllabus at all.

Justice Gavai: again question 115 ... That is also wrong.

Q5: Option (c) is correct. All candidates who marked it will get credit.

Q77: Question out of syllabus. All candidates get +0.25 irrespective of answer.

Q115: Option (d) “None of these” is correct. Full marks to all who attempted.

Q116: Error in Sets B, C & D. Candidates in these sets to get marks.

The Division Bench at Court No. 2 has commenced the day’s proceedings, with the CLAT 2025 matter expected to be taken up soon.

​The CLAT 2025 revised result is expected to be released by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) anytime soon. This follows the Delhi High Court's directive issued on April 23, 2025, mandating the Consortium to revise the marksheets and republish the final list of selected candidates within four weeks. However, with SC decision it will be clear if the result will be revised or not since it had put stay on CLAT Result Revision earlier.

In addition to the petition filed by Siddhi Sandeep Ladda, Aditya Singh has now filed a fresh petition in the Supreme Court. Both petitions are scheduled for hearing today.

The counsels informed the Supreme Court that a second petition has been filed challenging the earlier judgment passed by the Delhi High Court regarding the CLAT 2025 results.

The counsels representing the parties have requested the Supreme Court to list the CLAT 2025 matter at the top of the board on the next hearing date. It remains to be seen what serial number the case will be assigned.

December 20, 2024: The Delhi High Court ordered the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) to revise the CLAT 2025 results due to identified errors in two questions .

January 15, 2025: The Supreme Court directed that all CLAT 2025-related cases be transferred to a single High Court to ensure a uniform decision .

February 6, 2025: The Supreme Court officially transferred all pending CLAT 2025 cases to the Delhi High Court for consolidated hearings .

March 3, 2025: The Delhi High Court heard the CLAT 2025 result petitions and scheduled the next hearing for April 7 .

April 7–9, 2025: The Delhi High Court conducted hearings on the CLAT 2025 result revision cases.

April 9, 2025: The Delhi High Court reserved its verdict on the undergraduate batch matters.

April 23, 2025: The Delhi High Court directed the Consortium to release the revised CLAT 2025 results within four weeks, i.e., by May 21, 2025 .

April 30, 2025: The Supreme Court stayed the Delhi High Court's order to revise the CLAT-UG 2025 merit list.

May 7, 2025: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the Special Leave Petition challenging the Delhi High Court's ruling.

 The Supreme Court of India put a stay on the Delhi High Court’s order directing the Consortium of National Law Universities to revise the CLAT 2025 undergraduate merit list. The apex court granted this interim relief while issuing notice on a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed against the High Court’s decision.
