JEE Main 2026 January 21 Exam Live: The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the day 1 of JEE Mains session 1 exam TODAY. Shift 1 will start at 9 am and will end at 12 noon. While the shift 2 exam will begin at 3 pm and end at 6 pm.

The exam to be held on January 21, today, is for BE/BTech aspirants in both shifts. Candidates appearing for the exam should not forget to carry essential documents like the JEE Main 2026 admit card, a valid id proof, and other required documents to the exam centre.

For shift 1, candidates should report to the exam centre at 7 am. Gates of the centre will close at 8.30 pm, and no candidate will be allowed inside once the gates are closed.

JEE Main 2026 January 21 Exam Timings for Shifts 1 and 2

All candidates appearing for the JEE Mains exam today must take the exam timings seriously. NTA doesn't allow students inside the centre after the gate closes.

JEE Main 2026 Exam Start and End Time

Check below the exam time for JEE Main 2026 Jan 21. During the exam, no candidate will be allowed to leave the exam hall. If a candidate goes bio-break/toilet, he/she should undergo the mandatory frisking and biometrics again. This may lead to a delay in the exam for the candidates, and NTA will not allow any extra time for exam completion in such cases.

JEE Main 2026 Jan 21 Exam Day Guidelines

For the shift 1 exam today, candidates should take care of the following exam day guidelines and instructions:

Report on time: Reach the exam centre as per the reporting time mentioned on the JEE Mains hall ticket 2026.

Ensure biometrics on Aadhaar are UNLOCKED: Candidates are advised to ensure that their Aadhaar biometric authentication is not locked on the day of the examination. This is essential to facilitate a smooth and uninterrupted Aadhaar-based biometric verification process at JEE Mains centres.

Carry all mandatory documents:

  • Printed admit card with the filled self-declaration and non-Aadhaar declaration, if needed.
  • Valid  Photo ID Proof as uploaded in the online application form in ORIGINAL. Photocopies or images stored on mobile phones, etc., will NOT be accepted.
  • Photo verification document (for candidates who received an email from NTA)
  • 2 photographs same as the ones uploaded in the application form
  • PWD certificate, if needed

Be properly dressed: Follow the JEE Main 2026 dress code by NTA. Shoes with thick sole and garments with large buttons are not allowed. Sikh candidates are permitted to wear their religious articles i.e. "KARA" and "KIRPAN".

Do not carry prohibited items: Candidates are NOT allowed to carry Instrument/ Geometry/ Pencil box, Handbag, Purse, any kind of Paper/ Stationery/ Textual material (printed or written material), Eatables and Water (loose or packed), Mobile Phone/ Ear Phone/ Microphone/ Pager, Calculator, DocuPen, Slide Rules, Log Tables, Camera, Tape Recorder, to wear/carry any type of watch including Electronic Watches with facilities of calculator, any metallic item or electronic gadgets/ devices.

Diabetic candidates can carry: Eatables like sugar tablets/fruits (like bananas/apples/oranges) and transparent water bottles to at the exam hall. However, they will not be allowed to carry packed foods like chocolates/candy/sandwiches, etc.

Candidates can carry: One transparent simple ballpoint pen and a transparent water bottle.

    What is not allowed in JEE Mains?

    Candidates appearing for JEE Main 2026 exam must avoid anything which they wont require while taking the exam. JEE Main exam day guidelines host list of items that are allowed and prohibited items inside test centre. Candidates must avoid carrying personal items like purse, handbag, earphone, and microphones inside the JEE Main exam hall. Candidates found with any of the prohibited items will not be allowed inside the JEE Main test centre.

    Day 1 of JEE Main 2026 Session 1 Exam Starts TODAY

    The first day of the JEE Main 2026 exam will be held on January 21. The candidates appearing for the exam day are recommended to get a good night's sleep and wake up early tomorrow if the exam is in the morning shift.

    For JEE Main 2026 morning shift:

    • Candidates should prepare a clear plastic folder containing all mandatory documents.
    • Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep, aiming to be asleep as soon as possible. Avoid learning new topics and focus on light revision.
    • Set multiple alarms and check your route to the centre.
    • Wake up by 5:30 AM - 6:00 AM and have a light and nutritious breakfast.
    • Wear simple, light-colored clothes made of lightweight materials without metallic items. Opt for open-toe sandals or slippers with thin soles; shoes with thick soles are prohibited. Do not wear jewellery or watches.
    • Plan to reach the centre at least 60 to 90 minutes before the 9:00 AM start time, as gates close at 8:30 AM. Reporting time is 7 am for shift 1 candidates.

    NTA will hold the BE/BTech paper today, January 21, in two shifts.

    JEE Main dress code for female

    NTA does not distinguish between male and female candidates while implementing the dress code. The only instruction that NTA provides regarding the dress code via the JEE Main 2026 admit card is that "Shoes with thick soles and garments with large buttons are not allowed".

    But female candidates can take care of some additional points to have a seamless frisking at the exam centres:

    1. Avoid heavy jackets, padded coats, trench coats, or hoodies with thick linings, and multiple layers of thick clothing.
    2. Opt for a light sweater, a thin sweatshirt, or a plain cardigan.
    3. Plain jeans (without metallic studs or chains), simple trousers, or warm leggings/jeggings are allowed.
    4. Wear simple slippers or open flat sandals.
    5. Caps, hats, mufflers, stoles, and scarves should be avoided inside the centre. Follow the instructions by the centre invigilators.
    6. Avoid underwired bras, as they might cause problems during frisking.
    7. Do not wear sweaters or cardigans with metallic zippers, large decorative buttons, or metal-threaded embroidery.
  • Q:   Do I need to attempt all the questions in JEE Main exam?
    A:

    NO, it is compulsory to attempt all questions in the JEE Main exam. The JEE Main exam has negative marking and candidates must answer only those questions for which they know the correct answer. Students must note that there are no minimum marks in JEE Main that students need to score. Students gets All India Rank based on the marks they secure in exam and gets admission based on that rank.

    Q:   What type of questions are asked in JEE Main?
    A:

    There are two question types in JEE Main exam. Multiple choice questions and numerical ability questions. In MCQ, every question has 4 options with only 1 correct answer. Select the correct option. In numerical ability question type, no options are there. Solve them and write answer using keyword and mouse.

    Q:   Where can I check JEE Main 2026 question papers?

    NTA will release the JEE Main 2026 question papers a few days after the exam on the official website. Candidates can download the question papers PDFs and the answer keys from the website under their logins.

    JEE Main 2026 Jan 21 Exam LIVE: Total questions in JEE Mains

    In JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), there are 75 questions (25 each in Physics, Chemistry, and Math). There are 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions (NVQs) per subject, totalling 300 marks.

    Paper 2A (B.Arch) has about 77 questions, including Math, Aptitude, and Drawing.

    For Paper 2B (B.Plan), there are 100 questions (Math: 25, Aptitude: 50, Planning: 25).

    The candidates who have not registered forthe  JEE Main 2026 exam with Aadhaar have t o follow the following instructions:

    Live photo mistmatch: Candidates whose live photographs did not match with the photographs available in their Aadhaar during the filling of the application form or those who registered using any other identity proof must carry the photo verification certificate in original duly signed/attested by the Principal /Head Master or any Class-I Gazetted Officer, such as Tehsildar, Revenue Officer, SDM, DM/Class-I Gazetted Officer ofthe Indian Embassy (for NRI candidates), as per format shared in their registered email IDs of the candidates.
