In an official notification, the Higher Education Department directed all higher educational institutes regarding this decision. Students enrolled in Odisha Colleges and Universities for the academic session of 2022-23 will now be going for brief summer vacation from June 1 to 16, 2022.
The decision to reduce summer vacations has been made for all educational institutions now. Earlier, Odisha Schools were informed that summer vacations will only be given for 10 days.
As per the state government, summer vacation days have been reduced in order to cope up with the learning loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state government has asked the vice-chancellors of all state public universities and principals of government and non-government colleges to make sure that all academic activities are completed in time. Odisha Colleges, Universities and other higher education institutions have also been directed to conduct extra classes on holidays, working days and after classes if there is a need for them.
"Teachers and other employees will be entitled for additional proportionate earned leave in lieu of such curtailment of the summer vacation, which will be communicated in due course of time," stated the notification.
For the last two years, schools across the state have been kept closed due to COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdown imposed to curtail it. Students were also promoted to the next class without appearing in the examinations. Though the schools were holding online classes, they could hardly reach all students, the rural school students could not take benefit.
Considering all these factors, the government had drawn up a strategy to help the students, who missed out on studies in previous years, to catch up with previous years’ courses, sources said. The notification also stated that the class promotion for the students from Class 1 to 8 will be made by April 20. New Admission/Re-admission for Class 1 to 9 may be done from April 20 to April 30.
