Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi moved the resolution seeking the government nod to take steps for teaching Punjabi language as a mandatory subject in all government and private institutions of the state till Class 10.

The Punjab Assembly on Monday approved a resolution urging the state government to make teaching the Punjabi language mandatory in all schools till Class 10. The resolution was passed in unison. During the Budget session, Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi moved the resolution seeking the government nod to take steps for teaching the Punjabi language as a mandatory subject in all government and private institutions of the state till Class 10.

Mr Channi talked about a UNO report after moving the resolution. According to the report, the Punjabi language was among those 2,000 languages which are likely to disappear in the next 50 years. He emphasised on the persistent efforts for the sustainability of the languages. He further urged that the language should be given due respect in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Chandigarh. He further said that there was a need for efforts to make Punjabi first language in Chandigarh. He also added that its teaching needed to be made mandatory in all government and private schools of the state capital.

He also talked about the creation of a commission to firmly enforce the use of the language in the state. He informed that there were some schools in the state where students were being punished for communicating in Punjabi. For the time being, the teaching of Punjabi language in government schools is mandatory while it is voluntary in private schools under the CBSE. Giving support to the resolution, Akali MLA Sharanjit Singh Dhillon called for the teaching of Punjabi language should be made mandatory in convent schools.
