The Defence Ministry has decided to induct women fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force on permanent basis. Currently, women fighter pilots are inducted on the experimental norm. The move of the Defence Ministry has come over six years after the Indian air Force (IAF) started accepting women fighter pilots on an experimental basis.

This announcement was made by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on February 1. This decision of Defence Ministry is a testimony to the capability of India's Nari Shakti. The Minister of Defence tweeted, “The MoD has decided to convert the Experimental Scheme for Induction of Women Fighter Pilots in the Indian Air Force into a permanent scheme,"

Earlier, the Supreme Court had paved the way for the entry of women into the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA). Till now 16 women fighter pilots have been commissioned in the Indian Air Force. The Ministry of Defence has now given clearance to make it a permanent scheme.

The Defence Ministry had approved allowing women to join the Indian Air Force as fighter pilots in 2015. However, the induction of women SSC officers in fighter stream of Flying Branch began in 2016.
