Central Forces may soon induct transgenders as assistant commandants; Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have asked to share their views.

In a groundbreaking move, Government of India has taken a decision to induct transgenders in various central Armed Police Force. With the enforcement of this decision, trangenders can join various central forces as assistant commandant.

In order to facilitate the process, Ministry of Home affairs (MHA), in a letter, has asked Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to share their comments on incorporating the issues on transgender as ‘third gender’ along with male/female in the rules of CAPF (central armed police forces) AC Examination, 2020 on Wednesday.

Upon receiving views from these central bodies, MHA will forward them to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to incorporate transgender people as the third gender in the application forms. The recruitment exam for assistant commandant is due in the month of December this year, with the positive responses from different forces, transgender persons can apply for the exam this year onwards.

This historic move will be a big leap towards the upliftment of lives of transgenders in our nation who often face social discrimination from different sections. Former DG of CRPF K Durga Prasad, maintained: “This is the time of giving equal opportunities. We have to take care of is setting different parameters like training, job profile, etc”.
