In an exclusive interview with Shiksha.com, Dr KNS Acharya, Pro Vice Chancellor of GITAM Bangalore, shared insights about the admission process, newly launched programmes, GITAM GAT, GBAT, placement scenarios of the institute and more. Read the interview to know more about GITAM, infrastructure and academics.
Dr Acharya: GITAM began as an engineering college 44 years ago and became a deemed-to-be university in 2007. Since then, it has expanded into 13 schools covering disciplines such as medicine, law, architecture, business, and humanities. The university’s long-term goal is to be ranked among the top 100 globally, with a focus on applied learning, global partnerships, and industry-relevant programs.
Dr Acharya: GITAM is strengthening its translational research capacity through MURTI (Multidisciplinary Unit of Research on Translational Initiatives). The university has invested ₹100 crore from internal and external funds to establish advanced research labs across campuses. These labs provide students with early exposure to real-world research through structured internships.
Dr Acharya: GITAM conducts the GAT (GITAM Admission Test) and GBAT for business school programs. Candidates with high JEE scores may be exempted from the entrance test.
Dr Acharya: GITAM currently hosts over 400 international students. Many arrive through government-sponsored scholarships. Campus facilities include upgraded housing and international dining options. A dedicated support structure ensures compliance with academic and cultural requirements.
Dr Acharya: The engineering curriculum has been overhauled with input from more than 25 industry experts. New minors have been introduced in areas like software-defined vehicles, digital manufacturing, defence electronics, and sector-specific applications in computer science. Additionally, new full-time programs such as Robotics and AI have been launched in response to market demand.
Dr Acharya: Approximately 85% of students secure placement before or within three months of graduation. Average salary offers have grown by over 15% year-on-year. More than 600 recruiters visit GITAM annually, spanning sectors such as IT, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and services.
Dr Acharya: The current average student-to-faculty ratio is 20:1, with better ratios in smaller schools. GITAM has adopted a liberal education framework under the National Education Policy, enabling interdisciplinary learning and closer academic mentorship.
Dr Acharya: Program design is informed by structured industry consultation. Advisory boards of 25+ industry leaders have helped shape curriculum modules to match evolving sector needs, resulting in practical, skill-oriented learning experiences.
Dr Acharya: GITAM offers merit-based scholarships (ranging from 50% to 100%), need-based support for economically weaker sections, and scholarships for wards of defence personnel. The application is integrated into the admissions process.
Dr Acharya: Alumni engage through mentorship, recruitment, and participation in events such as Smart Ideothon. Their involvement supports both student development and the institution’s external visibility.
