To help students cope up with the academic loss and get clarity over the basics, the government launched the Mission Buniyaad programme to help students focus on foundational reading, writing and numeracy.
The outbreak of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the academic calendars, shifted education to hybrid mode and resulted in the continuous closure of schools and colleges. In order to bring academics back on track and address the pandemic-induced disruption in the teaching and learning process, the Delhi government is working to restructure the syllabus for the entire year for its primary and middle school students, to address the pandemic-induced disruption in teaching-learning.
Mission Buniyaad to improve foundational learning
Delhi schools reopened for all grades on April 1 after more than two years of either complete or partial closures. Since then, students of Classes 3 to 9 have not begun the syllabus for their grades. The government launched the Mission Buniyaad programme to focus on foundational reading, writing and numeracy.
Usually, schools conduct Mission Buniyaad activities and the summer camp are only for students who have been identified as being behind their grade level. However, this time it has continued through the course of summer vacations through summer camps for all students of these grades.
According to Shailendra Sharma, the principal advisor to the Director of Education, the recovery effort will continue beyond June 15, which is when summer camp ends, through a ‘dual strategy’.
Reduced syllabus for advance students
For Classes 6 to 8, the government has decided that the children who are still behind on their foundational competencies and are facing problems coping up with the current syllabus will continue to be taught under Mission Buniyaad. Children who can read ‘advanced stories’, and solve division problems will move on to a reduced syllabus.
