Before full-scale implementation, the updated curriculum will be piloted in select DIETs, including those in Prayagraj, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur.

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a comprehensive overhaul of the English curriculum for the Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) programme. The revamped curriculum will be rolled out across all District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and private teacher training colleges in the state, aligning with the transformative goals outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

This marks the first significant revision of the DElEd English syllabus in over a decade. Officials involved in the reform process said the new curriculum will emphasise practical communication skills, digital literacy, and contemporary teaching methodologies, with the aim of making future elementary teachers more effective in multilingual classroom settings.

Focus on Practicality and Digital Tools

The revised English syllabus will move beyond grammar-heavy instruction to include modules on spoken English, classroom communication, story-based learning, phonetics, and student-centric pedagogy. One of the key innovations will be the integration of digital tools, allowing DElEd trainees to utilise audio-visual content, AI-based language learning apps, and interactive platforms to improve their own English proficiency as well as their teaching techniques.

Capacity Building for Faculty

Recognising that a modern syllabus requires equally modern implementation, the state is also launching faculty development workshops. Trainers from SCERT and leading ELT (English Language Teaching) experts are being roped in to familiarise teacher educators with the updated content and methodologies. These training programmes will cover use of technology in language classrooms, inclusive education techniques, and interdisciplinary approaches.

Pilot Testing and Feedback Loop

Before full-scale implementation, the updated curriculum will be piloted in select DIETs, including those in Prayagraj, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur. Feedback from teacher trainees, faculty, and academic experts will be used to make final refinements.

The pilot will also track improvements in student outcomes and teacher confidence using baseline and post-training assessments. SCERT officials said the final syllabus will be frozen for the 2025–26 academic session based on these findings.

Aligning with NEP 2020 and NCF

The curriculum overhaul is part of a broader state effort to align teacher training with the goals of NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education (NCF-TE) 2023. One of NEP's core recommendations is that teacher preparation must focus on developing communication skills, multilingual abilities, and experiential teaching practices—all of which are being incorporated into the new English DElEd curriculum.

Once implemented, the updated DElEd English curriculum is expected to impact over 60,000 teacher trainees annually across 281 private training colleges and 67 DIETs in Uttar Pradesh. Authorities believe this reform could significantly enhance classroom teaching quality, especially in government primary schools where English instruction often faces challenges due to lack of teacher confidence.
