Many states have restricted admissions to the domiciles of the state and also many states have prescribed their own entrance examination for admissions to engineering colleges. Normally speaking centrally funded technical institutes base their admissions on ranking obtained in JEE Mains examination. The majority of the states across India conduct some or the other entrance test to give admission to their respective engineering colleges, the exception being Tamil Nadu.
