Petroleum engineering is the branch of the science in which the process of extraction of crude oil and natural gas available on the deposits found bellow the earth's surface is studied. A petroleum engineer basically design and develop the method through which oil and gas can be extracted from the deposits found below the earth surface. Once the oil and gas is discovered, a petroleum engineer work with geo scientists to understand the geologic formation of the earth surface and then they decide which drilling method should be used, they implement the drilling plan and monitors the drilling operation.
It is becoming most popular course in the field of technical education nowadays. In this course, the focus is on wide range of topics including geochemistry, geophysics, geomechanics, economics, geopolitics, tectonics, thermodynamics, knowledge management, oil and gas production and pipelines. There are undergraduate and post graduate course in petroleum engineering offered by number of colleges/universities in India. In these course, students study about the designing aspects of gas and oil reservoirs which are used for storage and transportation. These courses make them aware of the process of drilling the earth's surface for refining petroleum products.
