Monash University was established by the Act of the State Parliament of Victoria in the year 1958 as a result of the Murray Report. This is the first university that has been named after a person, rather than a city or state. Monash University's Clayton's campus is known to be the university's foundation campus that had its first student enrollment in the year 1961, making it the first university that was established in Victoria. The university started growing rapidly after the enrollment at Clayton's campus and reached to an enrollment of more than 20,000 students since it was established.

The students at Monash University mostly live on the on-campus or off-campus accommodations based on their preferences and budget. Most of the students at the university choose to live near the Clayton or Peninsula campus. The two residential options available at the Monash Clayton Campus include the Clayton Residential Village and the Clayton Urban Community.
