NIT Nagaland considers the scores of IIT-JAM for admission to the MSc programme. Followed by IIT JAM, students have to go through the CCMN counselling for final seat allotment to the institute. In addition to the exam, students must also meet the minimum eligibility criteria set by the institute which is to have a bachelor’s degree, namely BSc (Hons) in Physics with first class or 6.5 CGPA for General and OBC candidates and 55% aggregate or 6.0 CGPA in 10 scale grading for SC and ST candidates.

Students seeking admission to PhD must have completed their masters' degree with at least 60% aggregate (For General category candidates). In addition to this, they are required to go through an entranc exam and interview round conducted at the institute level for final admission. The research proposal shared by the student is also examined by the institute's committe before making the final decision of shortlisting a candidate.

NIT Nagaland M.Tech admissions are based on GATE entrance scores followed by CCMT Counselling. This two-year programme is offered across five specialisations. Students who have completed their BE/ BTech degree in the relevant stream with a minimum of 55% aggregate are eligible to apply for the NIT Delhi M.Tech programme.
