There isn't a single official “No. 1” engineering college in Punjab, since rankings depend on criteria like academics, placements, and infrastructure. That said, Thapar University is often considered the leading private engineering institution in the state due to its strong academic culture, campus facilities, and consistent industry exposure, which is why it's frequently placed at the top in most discussions.

Merit-based scholarships at Thapar University are given to students with strong academic performance. For first-year UG students, eligibility is based on Class 12 marks and JEE Main rank. From the second year onwards, students must maintain a high CGPA (usually 8.0+), with no backlogs, to continue the scholarship.
There is no income limit for merit-based scholarships.

You must have a bachelor's degree of at least 3 years in any discipline from a recognised university.
You need to have studied Mathematics either at the 10+2 level or during your graduation.
You should have at least 60% marks in aggregate in your bachelor's degree (55% for SC/ST).
Admission is based on merit (10th, 12th, and graduation marks).
In short: 3-year degree + maths at 12th or graduation + 60% (55% for reserved) is required for MCA at Thapar.

It has stronger academics, labs, placements, and peer environment, while LPU is more flexible and easier to get into. If you want exposure and future opportunities, Thapar's the safer bet.
