Dartmouth College was founded by Eleazar Wheelock  (a Congregational minister from Connecticut), in 1769. He established the College "for the education and instruction of youth of the Indian tribes in this land. English Youth, and any others." One of Wheelock's the earliest students,  Samson Occom, was a Mohegan Indian who played a key role in raising the money required to establish the college.

It is interesting to note that Eleazar Wheelock is a graduate of Yale University.

Dartmouth University offers housing opportunities to undergraduate students. However, it does guarantee accommodation. About 80% of juniors and seniors and 88-90% of all undergraduate students live on campus in the university's residence halls, living learning communities, and greek housing.

Interestingly, the university offers gender inclusive housing that is supportive of students who identify as trans, genderqueer, and/or gender non-conforming. Every House Community and Living Learning Community has gender inclusive housing options. Housing assignments in mixed-gender rooms are made on a case by case basis.
