In Australia, there is a relatively well-defined set of universities that will provide reputable credentials. This group is known as the Group-of-Eight (Go8) and comprises ANU, USyd, UMelb, UQ, UNSW, Monash, UWA, and UAdel. ANU is widely recognized as the best university in Australia for research and has a strong reputation but the location is not exactly desirable to everyone. USyd, UMelb, UQ, and UNSW are almost interchangeable in quality with regard to teaching, and you will benefit from being in large cosmopolitan cities with diverse people and cultures (all of which are important when you move on from university at the end of your degree). Monash, UWA, and UAdel do not quite have the strong reputations of the others in the Go8 but are still highly respected in Australia. Second-tier universities such as the Australian Technology Network (ATN), which include RMIT, UTS, Curtin, UniSA, and QUT are reasonable choices. As a final comment - one of the things I would always tell students that are willing to listen - the choice of university (at least amongst the ones I've listed above) doesn't matter anywhere near as much as how well you engage with your study (being motivated and learning beyond just what you need for exams), approaching your study in a professional manner (treating it like a job), and how you interact with your peers and mentors (a degree is more than just a piece of paper, it's about learning the skills you need to be a more productive member of society).
