In India, we have two types of colleges, one, those offering degrees in many fields like arts, Science, business including engineering and are generally known as Universities, and the second, which offer degrees only in engineering and are generally known as Institutes. Universities that offer other degrees along with engineering named their engineering degree as B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) and Institutes providing professional courses like engineering named their engineering degree as B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology). Some of the key differences between the two courses are:
Bachelor of Engineering (1,2,3, etc. )
Bachelor of Technology (a, b, c, etc. )
1. B.E. Is considered as knowledge-oriented course. A. B.Tech is considered as skill-oriented course.
2. More emphasis is laid on theory and focuses on strong fundamentals. B. More emphasis is laid on practical applications rather than theoretical aspects.
3. Being more knowledge oriented, course curriculum is updated but not as frequent as the other. C. Being technology oriented, course curriculum is considered as more upto date.
4. Internships and industrial visits may be an essential part of the curriculum. D. Internships and industrial visits are a mandatory part of the curriculum.
5. Generally, universities offering other degrees (like Science, arts, education etc. ). Along with engineering named their engineering degree as B.E. Generally, institutes (including IITs) offering only Engineering studies named their degree as B.Tech.
6. Some of the popular colleges are NSIT, BITS-Pilani, Anna University Chennai etc. F. Some of the popular colleges are IITs, NITs, DTU etc. Similarities between the two courses are:
In India, duration of both the courses is 4 years
Both courses follow semester pattern, with 2 semesters per year and a total of 8 semesters in 4 years
Orientation and approach of both the courses may be different but if we closely look into the course content then they are more or less the same
AICTE has clarified that it does not consider the two degrees as different and grants equal recognition to both the degrees have almost similar scope and future.
