If your Diploma is an Engineering Diploma, Polytechnic one, you can surely pursue Lateral Entry B.Tech in the stream you did polytechnic in. You will get a degree and better job prospects.

When you are done with X/10th, you can join Polytechnic which is a three year course. This is called diploma and is equivalent to 12th. When you take admission in B.Tech after this, you get into 2nd year because the first year is exempted for Lateral Entry/Diploma Holders. You do the degree in continuation of the Diploma Stream. It becomes a three-year course then.
