But on the other hand, total seats in all NIT's put together is just about 25K and with reservation under different categories, seats available for general or open categories is just about 10K. Hence, you can fancy your chances against these many seats with your rank of 38K. However, past experience shows that many students going for deemed to be universities, state government colleges, private colleges etc. And as a result, students with up to 50K ranking do get seats in one of the NIT.
