Hi.

Yes, a B.Sc in Agriculture qualifies you for M.Sc Biotechnology at most IITs.

Required steps:

Check IIT-specific eligibility on the JAM brochure.

Apply for JAM in the relevant subject (Life Sciences/Biotechnology).

Prepare for JAM thoroughly, especially Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetics sections.

1. At what age does your son have to start coaching for IIT?

It has three perfect points of entry, depending on the speed of your child:

  • Option A: Enter in Class 11 (Most widespread and not less than enough)

The majority of IIT toppers start coaching when they are in Class 11.

Coaching Class 11 -12 (2-year program) is just sufficient to crack JEE Main and Advanced.

This leaves Class 910 free to construct basics and score highly with the boards.

  • Option B: Major in Class 10 (Early foundation - optional)

Beneficial in case your son is interested in physical sciences ahead of his age in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics.

A degree and a diploma both lead to engineering careers, but they serve different goals.Degree (B.Tech/B.E.) is better if you want deeper technical knowledge, higher-paying jobs, campus placements, and future options like M.Tech, MBA, or research roles.Diploma is better if you want to start working early, focus on practical skills, or enter industry as a technician or supervisor. In simple terms:If you want long-term career growth, choose a degree. If you want quick job-oriented training, a diploma works. Both paths can lead to engineering — it depends on your goals.

With a JEE Main rank of 88,000 (OBC rank ~21,000), admission to top NITs/IIITs for CSE/IT is unlikely.

Best options:

  • Lower-tier NITs – Mechanical, Civil, ECE branches.

  • GFTIs (Government-Funded Technical Institutes) – CSE, ECE, IT possible.

  • State engineering colleges – Good alternatives with decent infrastructure and placements.
