The IIIT PPP Act, issued by the Indian Ministry of Education, designated IIIT Kottayam an institute of national importance. Students studying engineering and other subjects can choose from UG, PG, and PhD programme offered at Lottayam IIIT. Features a number of clubs, including the IEEE students, Technical, Cultural, Sports, Social and Literay, Entrepreneurial and Innovation, and others. Numerous students at IIIT Kottayam have been able to develop their leadership abilities due to these clubs. There are seperate hostels available for boys and girls. 

IIIT Kottayam conducts a written test to select candidates for PhD CSE programme. Selected candidates also need to pass a personal interview round conducted by the institute. IIIT Kottayam offers admission to PhD courses in four categories-Scholarship Holders (full-time), Sponsored (full-time), Self-financing (full-time) and External Registrants. 

The application fee per department is INR 1,000 for the General/ Gen-EWS/ OBC category and INR 500 for SC/ST/PWD/Female category candidates. This amount is completely non-refundable. Candidates can deposit the requisite application fee by using net banking or debit/credit card facilities. Additional charges are applicable as per the rule of the concerned bank. The fee is, however, not accepted through any other mode.
