Hi Milan,
You have to be proactively searching for universities offering research work in your area. Check their research activities, noble prize winners, patents, publications etc and overall ranking. Admission process includes an acceptance by a research supervisor. Before a formal application process, you must communicate with the specific department supervisors and share your research ideas and proposals. They have to accept you before you submit your application. Enquire about funding, stipends etc before applying. Also take the GRE .

Every institution that confers a PH. D in English literature will have the "scope" of their program and its options. These vary greatly from area of emphasis to area of emphasis and from one institution to another.
Decide what you are interested in learning and becoming an expert in and then find the doctoral program that allows you to pursue your interests.

I would suggest you to go for International Bussiness for your PHD over economics because International business comprises all commercial transactions (private and governmental, sales, investments, logistics, and transportation) that take place between two or more regions, countries and nations beyond their political boundaries.
