Purdue University was founded in 1869 under the Morill Act of 1862. It is a public land-grant research university and the flagship of the Purdue University System. Finally, in 1869, the Indiana General Assembly chose the Lafayette area for the new institution. This university was founded after Lafayette businessman John Purdue donated land and money to establish a College of Science, Technology and Agriculture.
