The terms LOM (letter of motivation) and SOP (statement of purpose) are often used interchangeably, as they refer to the same document. Though the purpose and format both the documents is the same, you may come across LOM with specific guidelines or word limits. In that case, you may be asked specifically about your motivations, goals or key experiences that left an impact on you or inspired you. Hence, unless specified otherwise, you can follow the statement of purpose format for undergraduate degree for both of them.

The SOP format for undergraduate admissions allows you to present your motivations, background, and vision. It goes beyond transcripts and resumes, showing what drives you. Additionally, there can be many things in your profile or background that only your SOP can properly convey/explain to the universities. For instance, an SOP can also talk about your vision for the future or address gaps in your educational journey. It can also be used to emphasize your suitability for the programme and talk about how you can contribute to the university/program, if selected.
