Ahmedabad University Students Engage with Urjit Patel on India’s Global Competitiveness

September 18, 2025: How can India make its companies more efficient to compete globally and turn tariffs into an opportunity rather than a threat?

This very question was raised by a first-year MS Economics student at Ahmedabad University, directly to Urjit Patel, Economist, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and recently appointed Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund. The informal interaction, held at the varsity campus, offered budding economists the chance to share a platform with one of India’s eminent economic thinkers.

Patel advised embracing innovation, leveraging technology, and viewing economic distortions as opportunities. For the students, the interaction was an inspiration, encouraging them to think critically, pursue rigorous inquiry, build methodological strengths, and help shape India’s role in a world.

Ahmedabad University: Preserving Jharkhand’s Food Heritage Through the Research of Jyoti Shukla

September 18, 2025: Mahua, known for its sweet-scented flowers, has long held cultural and nutritional importance in Jharkhand. Traditionally valued for its medicinal uses and role in community celebrations, mahua is now largely commercialised for alcohol production. This shift, coupled with changing aspirations and packaged foods, has diminished its place in everyday diets.

This transformation forms the core of research by Jyoti Shukla, an alumna of the Master of Management Studies in Heritage Management at Ahmedabad University. A native of Jharkhand, Jyoti is studying tribal food heritage, focusing on indigenous knowledge systems and local ingredients. She notes that mahua was once preserved through sun-drying, roasting, and pickling, making it available year-round as a nutrient-rich “energy ball.” Its fading use reflects the larger decline of tribal food traditions. Through her research, Jyoti seeks to highlight how food is more than sustenance—it embodies culture, ecology, and identity.

Her work explores forest foraging, edible greens, and intergenerational knowledge within rural communities. Many of these foods never reach the market, yet their nutritional and cultural value remains deeply embedded. Jyoti’s efforts document these practices, linking them to sustainability and heritage. Recognised internationally, she is one of seven researchers selected for the International Early Career Research Programme by the International Research Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region, where she presented her findings in Japan. For Jyoti, the goal is not only to revive memory but to stress relevance: traditional food practices hold lessons for sustainable living and community well-being today.

Ahmedabad University Study Reveals Indoor Air Can Be More Polluted Than Outdoors in Indian Cities

August 1, 2025: In a recent study led by Professor Aditya Vaishya at Ahmedabad University, researchers installed particulate matter air quality sensors across three types of spaces: an outdoor location, a standard indoor space such as a classroom or office, and an indoor space with an active pollution source like a burning stove. The study monitored levels of particulate matter, ozone, temperature, and relative humidity. The findings challenged the commonly held belief that indoor air is safer. In fact, PM concentrations indoors were higher than outdoor levels for more than 50 percent of the time, regardless of whether a pollution source was present.

While this phase of the study focused mainly on particulate matter, Professor Vaishya plans to extend the research to monitor gases such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone. These gases have been linked to a variety of health issues. Sulphur dioxide is known to contribute to cardiovascular problems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Nitrogen dioxide and ozone aggravate respiratory diseases and can lead to lung inflammation. Many of these pollutants are emitted by everyday items and processes such as perfumes, disinfectants, room sprays, and even routine cooking.

The situation is especially severe in rural households where traditional wood fire cooking remains common. Burning biomass releases high amounts of PM and VOCs and has been implicated in conditions such as tuberculosis and lung cancer. Although women and domestic workers contribute little to indoor air pollution, their longer exposure makes them disproportionately vulnerable to its effects.

This research also raises important questions about social equity. Domestic workers often spend long hours in multiple homes, exposed to deteriorated air quality without having any say in their work environment. Professor Vaishya plans to further explore these dimensions of social and environmental justice in his upcoming research.

Ahmedabad University Graduate's Passion for Psychology and Social Justice Leads Her to LSE

August 1, 2025: "Ahmedabad University gave me the foundation that international institutions look for - not just strong academics, but the ability to think critically, write persuasively, and engage in complex conversations while maintaining a personal stance," remarks Ishita Jain, a  BA (Hons)  graduate from the Class of 2025. Ishita is set to begin her graduate studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Ishita will pursue a Master of Science in Social and Cultural Psychology. She credits Ahmedabad University for igniting her interest in the social sciences.

Beyond the classroom, Ishita's intellectual curiosity, particularly where psychology and social justice intersect, drove her to take on multiple roles that rigorously moulded her. She served as an Undergraduate Research Assistant for faculty members, pursued her own independent research, presented her work at international conferences, and completed a thesis in her final year.

For her undergraduate research projects, Ishita worked under Nagireddy Neelakanteswar Reddy, Assistant Professor from the University's School of Arts and Sciences. In his project, 'Do Psychology Experiments Show that Cognition Affects Perception,' she assisted in literature reviews, analysing, categorising, and summarising research papers and experimental data to evaluate the validity and applicability of current approaches to studying cognitive penetration. For the second project, 'Philosophical Isms about the Mind and Psychology,' she conducted an extensive and systematic literature review, synthesising research papers and experiments that explore how various philosophical perspectives ("isms") inform our understanding of the human mind and psychological processes.

Ahmedabad University's unique academic structure, built on interdisciplinary learning and educational autonomy, empowered Ishita to explore courses across diverse fields. "The courses I took at Ahmedabad invited dialogue, critical reflection, and active engagement with pressing social questions," she explains. "We weren't just reading theories. We were asked to critique them, relate them to lived realities, and form our own arguments." This autonomy directly translated into independent thinking and goal-oriented execution, allowing her to take full ownership of her academic direction. Moreover, her extensive research projects rigorously prepared her for the demands of graduate-level study.

Ahmedabad University Study Finds Fruit Flies at Higher Altitudes Evolve Better Water Retention Traits

August 1, 2025: Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as fruit flies collected from higher altitudes in the Western Himalayas, has been found to produce longer-chained cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), which provide greater resistance against desiccation. Simply put, their outer hard body cover is coated with a lipid-based barrier that helps reduce water loss and plays a crucial role in communication and mating. Also, males from higher elevations showed a notable increase in total CHC content, while females exhibited a more balanced trade-off between short- and long-chained hydrocarbons.

These findings emerged from the study "High altitude favours long-chained cuticular hydrocarbons in Drosophila," led by Ahmedabad University doctoral student Abhishek Nair. While earlier studies have examined CHC variations across latitudes, the study's uniqueness lies in addressing how these hydrocarbons shift with changes in a vertical space (i.e. altitude).

Abhishek and his team collected fruit-fly D. melanogaster from three different elevations across the Western Himalayas, including Rohru (2,592 m), Chamba (996 m), and Mandi (760 m). These flies were then raised under controlled laboratory conditions for several generations to eliminate maternal effects before exposure to both regular and dry (desiccating) conditions.

Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the team identified 25 different hydrocarbon compounds. Statistical analysis revealed that flies from higher altitudes, both male and female, had a greater proportion of long-chained hydrocarbons in their cuticle. These longer chains appear to be an adaptive trait, reducing water loss in colder, drier climates. The observed patterns of CHC variation across altitudes did not match previously recorded trends across latitudes, suggesting that mountainous environments exert distinct pressures on insect adaptation.

"Our results demonstrate that Drosophila's cuticular hydrocarbons are not only highly responsive to environmental stresses but also vary significantly with altitude," said Abhishek. "This is a step forward in understanding how insect populations adapt to climatic gradients, particularly in mountainous regions where environmental change is steep and rapid."

Ahmedabad University Study Explores VCPE Exit Patterns and Foreign Investment Trends in Indian Firms

August 1, 2025: Understanding the complexities of foreign investment, investing patterns, and Venture Capital/Private Equity (VCPE) exits is critical for India's thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. A recent study, "Foreign Investors, Investing Patterns, and VCPE Exits – Empirical Evidence from India," provides valuable insights into how firm-specific and investor-related variables impact foreign, domestic, and Joint Venture (JV) participation in Indian firms.

Presented at the 32nd Annual Global Finance Conference at Suffolk University, Boston, the research drew upon an expansive dataset covering 8,693 investee firms, approximately 23,000 investment rounds, and 4,000 exit rounds from January 2000 to September 2024. This comprehensive empirical analysis revealed significant findings on investment and exit patterns.

Authored by Professors Vinodh MadhavanPoonam Dugar, and Parag Patel from Ahmedabad University's Amrut Mody School of Management, the study indicates that active Indian firms with increased VCPE deal activity (both in value and volume) are more likely to attract foreign investments. Interestingly, the research found a longer gestation period for investments made by foreign investors but faster exits for focused JVs characterised by collaboration between foreign and domestic investors. Furthermore, firms with high levels of investment activity and investors who invest across sectors exhibited reduced time to exit.

Analysing the exit patterns, the research highlights the complementary nature of domestic and foreign investors. It found that young Indian firms with a large investor base, low cumulative investments, and geographically diverse investors are likely to witness secondary sale exits. In contrast, relatively older Indian firms typically see open market exits. These findings indicate the collaborative nature of the relationship between domestic and foreign investors when it comes to Indian firms, signalling the critical role both are playing in the Indian entrepreneurial landscape.

Ahmedabad University Study Reveals Optimal Promoter Shareholding Range to Maximise Firm Value

August 1, 2025: Ownership structures within the Indian corporate landscape present a unique set of challenges, such as highly concentrated ownership, stringent debt markets and overlooked agency issues, where the interests of owners and managers may not always converge. Understanding how these factors interact with firm performance is crucial for a firm’s health and for enhancing its value.

Professor Vibha Tripathi from Ahmedabad University’s Amrut Mody School of Management investigated the critical threshold of shareholding where the interests of promoters and non-promoters align with firm performance, offering valuable insights for policymakers.

The study, which utilised fixed effects (FE) panel models, analysed a comprehensive sample of 306 firms listed in the BSE 500 from 2013 to 2022. To address potential endogeneity concerns, the researchers employed generalised method of moments (GMM) estimations. Their methodology involved classifying shareholding into four distinct ranges: less than 25 per cent, between 25 and 50 per cent, between 50 and 75 per cent, and more than 75 per cent. The classification allowed for the precise identification of the shareholding threshold where stakeholder interests converge and positively impact firm performance. Additionally, researchers identified the classification 50-75 per cent to be a critical range for promoter ownership. Within this range, the interests of both promoters and non-promoters were found to align optimally, leading to an enhancement in firm value.

Conversely, the study found that firms with less than 25 per cent promoter shareholding experienced detrimental effects on firm value. On the other hand, firms with promoter shareholding exceeding 75 per cent showed no significant enhancement in firm value. The researchers further supported their findings with metadata and sub-sample analysis, providing a foundation for their conclusions. Based on these comprehensive results, the study offers clear recommendations for policymakers to encourage and maintain promoter shareholding within the optimal range of 50-75 per cent.

Ahmedabad University Researchers Develop Plant-Based Nanotherapy for Visceral Leishmaniasis

August 1, 2025: Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe form of leishmaniasis which is caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani. VL is a life-threatening parasitic disease transmitted through the bite of phlebotomine sandflies. It primarily affects the liver and spleen. Despite the availability of drugs like Amphotericin B, current treatment options face substantial challenges, including drug resistance and prohibitive costs.

In line of these limitations, a team of researchers at Ahmedabad University explored a novel, plant-based therapeutic strategy that integrates essential oils with nanotechnology to target the Leishmania parasite. Harnessing the power of plants and nanoscience, the team studied the essential oils from fenugreek, thyme, and rosemary, known for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These oils displayed anti-leishmanial activity in prior studies but showed instability and poor bioavailability in their natural form.

To address this, the researchers, comprising alumna Jhanvi Patel, doctoral student Kikku Sharma, alumna Ramesh Chaudhari, and faculty members Professor Ashutosh Kumar and Professor Souvik Sengupta from the University's School of Arts and Sciences, developed nanoemulsions (ultra-small, stable droplets that encapsulate these oils). These nanoemulsions enhance the oils' stability, allowing higher bioavailability and improving cellular delivery, especially in immune cells like macrophages, which often shelter the parasite.

Further laboratory studies showed that the nanoemulsions exhibited selective toxicity against Leishmania donovani promastigotes, effectively targeting the parasite. They induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in the parasites, leading to cell death. Additionally, the formulations reduced the intracellular parasite load within infected macrophages in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, the nanoemulsions maintained a safety profile, showing low toxicity to host immune cells.

Among all formulations, the fenugreek oil nanoemulsion (FNE) displayed the most substantial antileishmanial effect, outperforming the unformulated oils and Amphotericin B treatments. The study also shows that crucial oil components, including trigonelline, thymol, and eucalyptol, can bind to the parasite's aquaglyceroporin protein, thus gaining access into the parasite. This computational insight supports the biochemical findings and validates oils' antiparasitic activity.

Ahmedabad University Student Explores AI-Driven Traffic Solutions in Prestigious Springer Publication

August 1, 2025: Rapid and reliable data exchange is crucial for developing and operating intelligent transportation systems using Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). However, the dynamic nature of VANETs, marked by high vehicle mobility and constantly changing network structures, pose challenges for traditional communication protocols.

Addressing these challenges, Maanit Shah, a BS (Hons) Class of 2026 student at Ahmedabad University, has authored a book chapter exploring how Reinforcement Learning (RL) can enhance data dissemination in these dynamic networks. His work talks about creating smarter communication systems for vehicles that can adapt instantly to traffic, road conditions, and vehicle movements.

The chapter discussed how existing methods pose a few challenges, namely the complexity of VANETs due to rapid vehicular movements and constantly altering positions and connections, making it difficult for traditional routing protocols to keep pace. VANET's unpredictability also proves that past solutions may not apply to current conditions. Maanit studied how RL can improve data sharing in intelligent transportation systems, making it more reliable and efficient for critical applications like accident warnings, traffic management, and even self-driving cars. RL stands out because it learns in real-time through continuous interaction with its environment. Essentially, RL enables routing protocols to intelligently respond to constant changes for more efficient data flow.

Maanit Shah's contribution is featured in the book chapter, "Intelligent Data Dissemination in Vehicular Networks: Leveraging Reinforcement Learning," published in the Springer volume Deep Learning Based Solutions for Vehicular Adhoc Networks (Studies in Computational Intelligence, Vol. 1207). He coauthored this work with researchers from Nirma University, the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering, and the team from Sahana System Ltd.

Ahmedabad University Doctoral Research Achieves Breakthrough in Flue Gas Pollutant Removal Using Microbubbles

July 15, 2025: A novel, cost-effective technique for removing harmful flue gas pollutants has been developed by Parveen Dalal, a doctoral student at Ahmedabad University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. The method achieves 100% removal of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and over 95% removal of nitrogen oxides (NO2) using a microbubble-assisted oxidation process, offering a scalable and less complex alternative to conventional emission control systems.

Industries such as coal power, manufacturing, and chemicals are major contributors to air pollution, emitting high levels of SO2 and NO2. Traditional methods like Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) are often costly and inefficient when treating both pollutants simultaneously. This study introduces a wet oxidation system using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and microbubbles—tiny bubbles under 100 µm in size that rise slowly, increasing the gas-liquid contact area. This boosts pollutant solubility and enables H2O2 to act as a single oxidant without requiring UV light or co-oxidants, reducing both complexity and cost. The research, guided by Professors Snigdha Khuntia and Sridhar Dalai, was published in Chemical Engineering and Processing – Process Intensification (Elsevier). It provides a thermodynamically feasible and industrially viable approach to cleaner air and sustainable environmental practices.

Competing with students across Europe challenged her to lead under pressure, think critically, and innovate in real time. Yet, her growth extended beyond academics. Living in a new geography and climate taught her discipline, resilience, and sustainability in practice. “I’ve returned with habits that feel essential now,” she shares. Khushi’s story reflects the impact of Ahmedabad University’s semester exchange programmes in shaping globally aware, self-reliant, and thoughtful individuals. “This exchange was never just about studying abroad—it was about growing through challenges and saying yes to experiences that shape who you are,” she concludes.

Ahmedabad University Researchers Advance Non-Invasive Brain Tumour Diagnosis with AI-Based Solution

July 15, 2025: Ahmedabad University researchers are leading a breakthrough in medical research with the development of an AI-based digital solution for non-invasive brain tumour characterisation. The interdisciplinary project integrates deep learning and radiomics to address the limitations of biopsy-dependent diagnostic practices, offering a more comprehensive and patient-friendly alternative. Biopsies, though considered the diagnostic gold standard, are invasive and provide limited insight into the tumour’s microenvironment. They can often be inconclusive, necessitating repeat procedures. In contrast, the proposed AI tool leverages convolutional neural networks (CNNs), transformer-based deep learning models, and radiomics feature extraction to analyse 3D MRI volumes. These features will train a machine learning classifier to segment and characterise brain tumours, with a focus on gliomas, using publicly available datasets like the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).

The research team is led by Professor Jayendra M Bhalodiya (School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Bagchi School of Public Health), with Co-Investigators Professor Mehul Raval and Professor Kaumudi Joshipura. Their work exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling critical healthcare challenges. Supported by Ahmedabad University’s Challenge Grant, this initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to research-driven innovation aimed at real-world impact and advances in precision medicine.

Ahmedabad University Professor Explores How Insurance Type Shapes Clinical Decision-Making in US Healthcare

July 15, 2025: Can the type of insurance influence the medical care patients receive, even when clinical conditions are the same? Subhankar Saha, Assistant Professor at Ahmedabad University’s Amrut Mody School of Management, explores this question in his recent study presented at the 2025 Industry Studies Association Annual Conference at MIT.

His paper, Patients, Payors, and Procedures, examines how insurance-related administrative requirements, termed "process frictions", impact medical decision-making in the U.S. healthcare system. Focusing on cardiac care and changes to Medicare reimbursement policies in 2011–12, Saha compares Medicare’s historically lower administrative barriers to private insurance, which often requires prior authorisations for procedures. The findings reveal that Medicare patients initially received more procedures than those with private insurance. However, after Medicare introduced stricter approvals, the number of prescribed procedures declined, narrowing the gap. This suggests that administrative rules—not just clinical need—can shape treatment decisions. The research raises important considerations for policymakers, healthcare providers, and patients. It highlights the unintended consequences of policy changes and urges efforts to reduce internal process frictions, ensuring timely and unbiased medical care. Professor Saha’s work underscores the need for a more patient-centric and streamlined healthcare system.

Ahmedabad University Doctoral Student Develops Platinum-Enhanced Catalyst to Boost Clean Energy Water-Splitting Efficiency

July 15, 2025: By strategically engineering the incorporation of platinum into nickel–iron oxide compounds and activating them via electrochemical reduction, Rajeshree Liya, a doctoral student under the supervision of Professor Aditi Singhal at Ahmedabad University's School of Engineering and Applied Science, has developed a cost-effective and highly efficient catalyst to enhance the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). This advancement addresses the challenge in clean energy technologies: the inherently slow and energy-intensive nature of the OER.

Rajeshree's research work involves using nickel-iron oxides, which are abundant and inexpensive. The trick lies in how very less amounts of platinum (Pt) are incorporated and then activated through a pre-treatment process called electrochemical reduction activation (ERA). The study investigated two methods of incorporating platinum (Pt) into these oxides, such as Pt-supported (Pt on the surface) and Pt-substituted (Pt integrated into the structure). After synthesising various samples with different Pt concentrations (0.25, 0.5, and 1 per cent), initial electrochemical tests showed that the Pt-modified compounds didn't outperform the base nickel-iron oxide.

Rajeshree presented her work at the International Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering, and Technology (CCT2025) in Rome, Italy. "This experience was incredibly enriching, both academically and personally," she stated, expressing gratitude for the Rasila Kadia Excellence in Research award from the University, which made her participation in the international conference possible. She also credited her supervisor, Professor Aditi Singhal from the School of Engineering and Applied Science, for her unwavering guidance and support throughout the research. Rajeshree looks forward to applying the insights gained to strengthen her academic contributions further.

Ahmedabad University Students Gain Global Business Insights in Thailand

July 11, 2025: Students from Ahmedabad University’s Amrut Mody School of Management recently participated in a ten-day international immersion programme in Thailand. Attended by students from the Integrated MBA and BCom (Hons) programmes, the initiative aimed to provide exposure to global business practices, innovation, and technological disruptions. The academic sessions were held at the prestigious Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), where globally recognised faculty led interactive sessions on digital disruption, business model innovation, and AI in strategic decision-making. Case discussions, workshops, and group activities promoted critical thinking and collaborative learning.

A highlight of the programme was the industry visit to Ichitan Group Public Company Limited, a leading Thai beverage company. Students observed how smart manufacturing and data-driven marketing support business agility and sustainability in a competitive environment. Beyond academics, the programme featured cultural immersion through guided visits to Bangkok and Ayutthaya. Students explored Thai cuisine, local markets, and basic language skills, enriching their understanding of global business in a cultural context. The immersion programme equipped students with practical knowledge, cross-cultural competence, and a deeper understanding of the evolving global business landscape, preparing them to lead and innovate in a dynamic world.

Ahmedabad University Study Reveals Complexities in Data-Driven Urban Governance

July 11, 2025: A recent study by Professor Bhargav Adhvaryu of Ahmedabad University’s Amrut Mody School of Management, co-authored with urban planning consultant Riby Rachel Mathew, critically examines data-driven urban governance in India through the lens of the Swachh Survekshan (SS) initiative. Published in Habitat International, the study uses Thiruvananthapuram as a case study to explore how digital initiatives like SS, launched in 2016 under the Swachh Bharat Mission, shape waste management practices and citizen participation.

The study acknowledges that SS has encouraged cleaner practices and greater public engagement, but highlights major shortcomings. Often treated as a formality to secure funding, SS suffers from inconsistent implementation, a lack of data training among local officials, and a centralised, one-size-fits-all model that ignores city-specific realities. The multi-layered governance structure—spanning local, state, and national levels—further complicates coordination and weakens participatory planning.

Professor Adhvaryu stresses the need for standardised, granular data protocols and shared systems for collection, access, and analysis. He advocates for stronger inter-departmental cooperation, improved data ownership, and consistent training in data interpretation. The study concludes that while national efforts for digital governance are commendable, long-term institutional development and capacity-building are essential for meaningful, local-level transformation.

Ahmedabad University Emerges as a Leading Alternative to Studying Abroad

July 3, 2025: As global uncertainties increasingly affect student plans to study overseas, including visa delays, shifting immigration policies, and rising costs, Ahmedabad University is emerging as a strong and credible alternative for those seeking a globally benchmarked education closer to home.

Ahmedabad University offers students the opportunity to learn from world-class faculty, many of whom hold doctoral degrees from some of the world’s top universities such as Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Chicago, University College London (UCL), and the University of Pennsylvania. These scholars bring international academic training and research experience into classrooms designed for deep engagement and critical thinking.

In 2025, Ahmedabad University was named Leadership and Management Team of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards Asia, the top honour among over 500 entries from 16 countries and territories. The judges praised the University’s bold and imaginative transformation into a leading player in India’s research and innovation landscape.

Admissions are currently open for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for the 2025 intake. The University offers generous merit- and need-based scholarships to support a diverse cohort of students.

Founding Chairman of the Board of Management and former Board Member, Prafull Anubhai, releases his book at Ahmedabad University

July 3, 2025: In his latest book, Institutions, Values and Life Lessons, Prafull Anubhai offers a deeply personal account of building institutions across six transformative decades. Drawing on experiences with organisations such as IIMA, CEPT, NID and Ahmedabad University, he reflects on the values, dilemmas and decisions that shape institutions built to endure. His narrative, grounded in lived experience rather than theory, provides a compelling reflection on leadership, legacy and learning, guided not by prescriptive models but by quiet observation and thoughtful engagement.

The book, structured in four parts, presents a rich tapestry of roles and responsibilities that Anubhai undertook across varied domains. His perspective is that of a “serendipitous witness,” someone who engaged deeply in the process of institution building without seeking command or acclaim. Along the way, he acknowledges mentors and collaborators whose vision and values left a lasting imprint on his journey. The strength of the book lies in its ability to intertwine personal memory with institutional history, offering readers not only insights but also enduring questions about resilience, purpose and leadership.

As Kiran Karnik notes in the Foreword, this is ultimately a story of quiet leadership and hope, centred on individuals and institutions that chose character over charisma and stewardship over saviourhood. The book invites readers to look beyond textbook frameworks and reflect on the moral architecture that underpins strong organisations. With humility, clarity and grace, Prafull Anubhai offers not just a reflection on the past but a legacy of ideas for the future.

How Does the Choice of Being a Morning or Evening Person Affect Asthma Condition?

July 3, 2025: An individual’s preference for being a morning or evening person, also known as chronotype, can determine how susceptible one is to chronic ailments. A recent multicentre study showed how the chronotype influences health-related quality of life (HRQL) in adults with conditions such as asthma.

The study, helmed by Subhabrata Moitra, Assistant Professor from Ahmedabad University’s Bagchi School of Public Health, surveyed 691 adults with asthma from Canada, India, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Participants completed a digital questionnaire covering lifestyle, mental health, sleep habits, and asthma experience.

This study extends Professor Moitra’s earlier work, where the group showed artificial light at night (ALAN), evening chronotype, and night shift work exposures were associated with a 88%, 35%, and 33% higher odds of allergic diseases, respectively.

Published in JACI Global, a journal of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), the study Association Between Higher Morning Preference and Better Health-related Quality of Life in Asthma paves the way for clinicians to consider chronotype as a determinant of HRQL, encouraging a patient-centred approach that integrates mental health, behaviour, and lifestyle into care strategies.

BBA (Hons) Graduate Pearl's Journey of Excellence to Singapore Management University

July 3, 2025: Excellence at Ahmedabad University is not just a value but a way of life, a rite of passage, and the guiding principle of our academic journey. It is deeply ingrained in the culture of the University, reflected in the commitment of our faculty and the aspirations of our students. The pedagogy, rooted in a commitment to interdisciplinarity, experiential learning, and research thinking, offers a holistic academic environment. Students are encouraged to explore ideas, question hypotheses, and develop a mindset of inquiry and innovation.

It is this rigour and mindset that our recent graduate, Pearl ShethBBA (Hons), will carry with her to Singapore Management University, becoming a true ambassador of Ahmedabad University's education.

Learning at Ahmedabad was not limited to lecture halls. As a varsity Theatre Club member for three years, Pearl developed leadership, resilience, and empathy in a unique environment. "Whether it was leading a production, managing a team, or navigating uncertainty on stage, these experiences imparted lessons in confidence and clarity," she stated.

Pearl's journey serves as evidence of how Ahmedabad University equips its students with academic knowledge and the courage to pursue a meaningful career, contributing to society and thus preparing for a career and life.

Investigating Maternal Asthma's Impact on Prenatal and Neonatal Health

July 3, 2025: Women with asthma face a 15 per cent higher risk of preterm birth (PTB), a 12 per cent higher risk of low birth weight (LBW), and a 9 per cent higher likelihood of undergoing Caesarean sections. Additionally, lack of prenatal education among first-time mothers with asthma showed that they were 82 per cent more likely to deliver preterm and 83 per cent more likely to have a low-birth-weight baby than their non-asthmatic counterparts.

The findings emerging from the study of Subhabrata Moitra, Assistant Professor at Ahmedabad University's Bagchi School of Public Health, drew upon a national pregnancy cohort in Canada, examining more than 4,30,000 pregnancies. Women were classified into various asthma categories (current, past, and active) and phenotype groups based on blood markers (eosinophils and neutrophils), and by their medication regimens.

The study proposes an interdisciplinary approach that requires healthcare professionals, researchers, and educators to converge their asthma management strategies. Early diagnosis and proper classification of asthma are crucial for healthcare professionals to create effective management plans. These strategies, coupled with prenatal education modules, could lower the risk of complications for newborns. Additionally, the study calls for medical experts to reevaluate the use of certain asthma medications, like oral corticosteroids (OCS), during pregnancy to find steroid-sparing alternatives.

Upcoming Webinar on "Exploring the relation between Energy Consumption and Emissions for Developing and Emerging Economies"

June 11, 2025: The relationship between emissions and economic growth is theorised to follow an inverted U-shape, with pollution rising in early development stages and declining after a certain income level.

Assuming a linear link between energy use and emissions, a similar U-shape might exist between growth and energy consumption. However, energy efficiency plays a crucial role in shaping this relationship. In developing and emerging economies, sectors like agriculture, industry, and transport vary in energy efficiency, and shifting sectoral contributions affect the emissions-energy dynamic. This highlights the need for sector-specific and efficiency-focused policies, with broader implications for sustainable growth through technology adoption and urban planning.

Sounds of Other Shores: The Musical Poetics of Identityon Kenya’s Swahili Coast

June 10, 2025: Sounds of Other Shores takes an ethnographic ear to the history of transoceanic stylistic appropriation in the Swahili taarab music of the Kenyan coast.

Swahili taarab, a form of sung poetry that emerged as East Africa’s first mass-mediated popular music in the 1930s, is a famously cosmopolitan form, rich in audible influences from across the Indian Ocean. But the variants of the genre that emerged in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa during the twentieth century feature particularly dramatic, even flamboyant, appropriations of Indian and Arab sonic gestures and styles.

Combining oral history, interpretive ethnography, and musical analysis, Sounds of Other Shores explores how Swahili-speaking Muslims in twentieth-century Mombasa derived pleasure and meaning from acts of transoceanic musical appropriation, arguing that these acts served as ways of reflecting on and mediating the complexities and contradictions associated with being “Swahili” in colonial and postcolonial Kenya. The result is a musical anthropology of Kenyan Swahili subjectivity that reframes longstanding questions about Swahili identity while contributing to broader discussions about identity and citizenship in Africa and the Indian Ocean world.

The Lived Experiences of Skilled Indian Women Immigrants (SIWI)

AU

December 13, 2023: A work titled The Lived Experiences of Skilled Indian Women Immigrants (SIWI) Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic: Immigration Trajectories to Canada was co-authored by Urmi Biswas Nanda, a professor at the School of Arts and Sciences. The purpose of this study is to better understand how actual and prospective female immigrants used their everyday agency to navigate the intersections between uncertainty around immigration procedures and daily limits by tying together their pre- and post-migration lived experiences.

"The idea of pandemic navigation is a useful lens to explore the complex intersections between the pandemic, migration, and gender," the author states. The act of deliberately evaluating a situation, determining viable routes, selecting one to pursue, and then proceeding along that path are all part of the process of navigation.

Ahmedabad Professor Contributes to UNEP’s The Emissions Gap Report 2023

AU

December 13, 2023: One of the principal writers of the United Nations Environment Programme's The Emissions Gap Report 2023 is Minal Pathak, an associate professor at Ahmedabad University's Global Centre for Environment and Energy.

2023's Emissions Gap Report: A damaged record In advance of the COP28 in Dubai, a report titled "Temperatures hit new highs, yet the world fails to cut emissions (again)" was released on November 20. It highlights the critical need for greater climate action.

According to the analysis, current national commitments made under the Paris Agreement are insufficient and would likely lead to global warming of 2.5–2.9°C this century. The report urges all countries to quicken their shifts towards low-carbon development across their entire economies. Greater ability and responsibility for emissions will require more aggressive and quick action by G20 members, especially the high-income and high-emitting ones, as well as the provision of financial and technical support to developing countries.

Ahmedabad University Launches A Specialised Online Programme For Literature Followers

January 19, 2022: Ahmedabad University's School of Arts and Sciences has created an online programme called 'Literature for Life' with the goal of instilling a passion for reading literature as a source of fun as well as an intellectual guide to satisfaction.

This course will introduce students to a variety of views and strategies for reading literary texts with the purpose of learning important life lessons in order to achieve a variety of personal, professional, and social objectives.

Students will engage in a close and critical reading of a set of texts (novels, short tales, and plays) by Indian and worldwide authors as part of this course. The course will push students to read and analyse narrative fiction from a variety of genres, including fable, romance, historical fiction, family saga, war, and societal conflict.

With the support of a variety of social and organisational theories, the course encourages students to explore character, story and setting in order to draw connections with their daily realities, perceptions, and social attitudes. Significant topics from the texts, such as ‘conflict,’ ‘empathy,’ ‘leadership,’ ‘decision-making,’ ‘responsibility,’ ‘courage,’ and ‘attitude toward the ‘other,’ will be examined and debated.

On completion of the course, the students would be able to:

  • Interpret literary texts in terms of both personal relevance and conceptual perspectives.
  • Identify key learning with regard to personal and professional decision-making, organisational expectations, and terms of engagement with society.
  • Derive reflections for personal transformation based on the course readings.
  • Articulate in written format insights drawn on each of the above aspects.

July 14, 2021: Dr Amol Agrawal, Assistant Professor at Ahmedabad University, was recently invited for a WhatsApp session by Shiksha.com to communicate with several graduates planning to take admission to the MA in Economics programme at Ahmedabad University.

Dr Agrawal teaches Economics at Ahmedabad University's Amrut Mody School of Management. He holds a decade-long experience of working in Mumbai's financial markets as an economist. He is a frequent blogger, and his blog is consistently placed among the top 100 economics blogs worldwide. During the Whatsapp session, Dr Agrawal addressed students' questions about the eligibility criteria for admission to the institution, the selection process, specialisations offered, the curriculum, scope, placement opportunities, and the programme fee.

Eligibility Criteria: A graduate degree with a minimum aggregate of 50% is required for admission to the Ahmedabad University MA in Economics programme. Following the completion of the application form, the university conducts a thorough screening process. The university also provides internship opportunities with prominent organisations such as the Reserve Bank of India, Centre for Policy Research, and IIM Ahmedabad to ensure students' holistic development.

Ahmedabad University review.

Placements: To be honest, at Ahmedabad University and after the completion of my B.Com., there were not any placement facilities available. So, you need to look for off-campus jobs and internships. So, don't come here in hope of any placements; your aim should be to just study and develop your skills.
