North-Eastern Hill University was established in 1973 by the Act of Parliament. The act has been passed by both houses of the parliament with the assent of the president. The campus of the university is spread over an area of 1225 acres of land. NEHU Shillong is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade A. The university is also recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). As per the NIRF ranking 2021 for the university category, NEHU has been ranked 59 whereas its NIRF ranking for the year 2020 in the same category was 49.
