IIM Visakhapatnam recently received an award of Rs 6 crore for the capacity-building-cum-consultancy project by the Union ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship.

The Indian Institute of Management-Visakhapatnam (IIM-V) is all set to deploy 76 fellows to Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship (MGNF). Reports suggest that IIM-V will deploy one fellow per district. IIM Visakhapatnam recently received an award of Rs 6 crore for the capacity-building-cum-consultancy project by the Union ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship.

“MGNF is a two-year certificate programme aimed at providing academic inputs and field experience to understand and contribute to the creation of a district-level skill development ecosystem,” IIM V said. A certificate in public policy and management will be awarded to the fellows by IIM-V upon successful completion of the programme. Talking about the programme, IIM-V director Prof M Chandrasekhar said that “the MGNF programme combines classroom sessions with intensive field immersion at the district-level. It would be a unique opportunity for young aspirants to promote skill development in district economies and in turn contribute to nation-building, while at the same time earning academic credentials from IIM-V.”

“Fellows will be given Rs 50,000 monthly stipend during the first year and Rs 60,000 during the second year. IIM-V has the second-largest cohort of MGNF fellows after IIM-Bangalore. The fellows are expected to enrich skilling programmes by bringing in fresh thinking to local planning, execution, community interaction and outcome management,” Professor Chandrasekhar added.

For the smooth and streamlined executing of this two-year programme, a programme committee has been constituted, MGNF programme chair Professor M Shameem Jawed informed. “A team from IIM-V recently visited a few districts of Andhra Pradesh and interacted with local officials to understand ground-level scenario, so that we can tweak the curriculum based on their feedback, needs and expectations. Likewise, the teams will visit Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh in the coming months,” the programme director said.
