Reasons to study Computer Science and Engineering at The NorthCap University

The University understands well about the paradigm shift of the education system and hence, provides teaching and learning practices that are progressive. The University introduced various labs such as Tinkering Lab, Machine learning laboratory, Data Communication Lab, Cisco Networking Lab, High-Performance Lab and Cloud computing lab to broaden the technical understanding and encourage innovation at the initial stage of the course.

The Tinkering Lab provides the working environment on recent technologies as well as enhances peer-to-peer communication with students of multiple domains, resulting in to endorsement of inter-disciplinary projects. The department of Computer Science imparts exhaustive knowledge on advanced machine learning techniques and methodologies including statistics in Machine Learning lab. This lab is equipped with customised machines with the ‘State of the Art’ configuration. The dedicated technical staff and faculty provide hands-on experience on emerging languages and technologies like Python for coding supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms for various applications such as edge detection in images, pattern recognition, character recognition etc.

The Data Communication Network (DCN) Lab supports teaching and research work in the field of data communication. Researchers may use tools for planning and testing the behaviour of physical communication networks. To congregate the emergent demand for ICT Professionals and to improve the career prospects of students, the Cisco networking programme is adopted by the NorthCap University. The main aim of this programme is to inculcate networking and IT skills in students who want to enhance their expertise and practical knowledge. With a dedicated CISCO lab, over 100 students have already benefited from this programme.

With cloud computing becoming more prevalent in companies, both large and small, there is a surge in requirement for Cloud professionals globally. Cloud Lab has been designed at NCU, which provides a research platform for exploring the potential of distributed cloud in multidisciplinary research work with more end-user interaction. NCU facilitates a real Cloud environment to enable students for the ever-growing cloud business model. The department has conjoined with the AWS educate initiative through this lab. Students learn scalable programming on Amazon AWS using – Elastic Compute Cloud, Simple Storage Service, RDS, DynamoDB, Beanstalk, lambda and other AWS tools and SDK. Computing has moved to next levels via High-Performance Computing (HPC) throughout the past decades.  We at NCU incorporated HPC labs, aiming to integrate HPC concepts and training across the computing curricula in multiple disciplines to motivate students’ interest in computing and improve their problem-solving skills. Faculty members follow an effective pedagogy to teach new generation computing to their students.  Currently, the HPC Lab is used for High dimensional data analytics, Modelling and simulation, Digital Image Analysis, Digital Signal Processing, AHPC, Big Data and Hadoop Cluster installation.

In addition to teaching, Faculty at NCU spend a significant amount of time doing research on various recent topics. At NCU, importance on faculty research is encouraged as the quality of the research directly translates to the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom. Major areas of research in CSE department are Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Data Mining, Soft Computing, High-Performance Computing, Computational Optimisation, Software Engineering, Information Security, Speech and Image Processing, Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence and BlockChain. CSE faculty and students are among the most prolific contributors of award papers to major conferences in their respective field. There are more than 200 publications in various national and international journal of repute over a period of five years. Our faculty members and research scholars have successfully completed some of the projects which were sponsored by government agencies while meticulously working on some of the ongoing ones.

With all these efforts, Team NCU is gaining the methodological expertise needed to carry out research work by adopting IT enriched research platform in the campus, supportive leadership, appropriate policies and procedures, effective educational program accompanied with a focused vision towards fostering integrity in research.
