Shift-Wise JEE Main Marks vs Percentile 2026 - January Session

NTA conducts JEE Mains exam across various shifts, and not all shifts are equal.

Example:

  • 150 marks in an easy shift can give 94 percentile
  • 150 marks in a tough shift may give 97 percentile

This happens because:

  • Percentile depends on relative performance
  • Normalisation balances difficulty

Understanding JEE Main Marks, Percentile, and Rank - The Basics

It is important to understand three key terms:

  1. JEE Mains Marks
  2. Percentile in JEE Mains
  3. JEE Main Rank

Many students mix these up, which leads to confusion and panic after results. Let us break them down one by one.

What Are JEE Main Marks?

JEE Main marks are the actual marks you score out of 300 in the exam. Total marks in JEE Main are 300. Each of the three subjects in the exam carries the following marks:

  • Physics: 100 marks
  • Chemistry: 100 marks
  • Mathematics: 100 marks

Your total marks depend on:

  • Correct answers (+4)
  • Wrong answers (- 1)
  • Unattempted questions (0)

Marks are important, but they do NOT decide your rank directly.

What Is JEE Main Percentile & How Is It calculated? (Most Important Concept)

JEE Main result is NOT based on marks, it is based on percentile.

Simple Definition: JEE Main percentile shows how many students you performed better than.

For example:

  • 95 percentile means you scored better than 95% students
  • 99 percentile means you scored better than 99% students

But, the percentile is not your percentage. Even if you score 180 marks, your percentile depends on:

  • Exam difficulty
  • Shift difficulty
  • Performance of other students in your shift

That is why the same marks give different percentiles in different shifts.

How Is JEE Main Percentile Calculated?

NTA calculates JEE Mains percentile using this formula:

Percentile = (Number of candidates who scored equal to or less than you ÷ Total candidates in that shift) × 100

Important points:

  1. Calculation is done shift-wise
  2. Raw marks are converted into percentile
  3. The highest scorer in each shift gets 100 percentile
  4. Later, the best percentile across sessions is considered (for students who attempt both January and April).

JEE Main Rank: Most Important

After percentile calculation, NTA prepares the All India Rank (AIR). Rank is based on:

  • Your overall percentile
  • Total number of candidates

Note that, lower the rank number, the better the JEE Mains rank. Also, JEE Main rank is what matters for JoSAA counselling and college allotment, not marks.

What is NTA Score in JEE Mains?

NTA score in JEE Mains is the aggregate percentile score of all three subjects. Candidates having query what is NTA score are informed that NTA score is same as aggregate percentile score.

Percentile scores are scores based on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. The marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees. The Percentile Score indicates the percentage of candidates that have scored EQUAL TO OR BELOW (same or lower raw scores) that particular Percentile in that examination. Therefore, the topper (highest score) of each session will get the same Percentile of 100, which is desirable. The marks obtained in between the highest and lowest scores are also converted to appropriate Percentiles.

Why is JEE Main Result Announced in Percentile?

The JEE Main exam is conducted in two sessions in January and April over many days with 2 shifts each day. There's a possibility that the question paper for a particular day can be more difficult or easier than any other day. To overcome this possible parity in difficulty level, normalisation is done. The normalised marks are not the actual marks obtained by the candidate, but a comparative score obtained using a specially developed formula by NTA. The range of JEE Mains marks vs percentile is given below based on the previous years' trends and the normalisation formula used by NTA. The article below will provide important details to candidates about JEE Main marks vs percentile.

Also Read:

JEE Main Normalisation: Percentile Calculation Formula Explained

After compiling the raw marks, the NTA applies the normalisation formula to get the percentile scores of a candidate for each subject – Maths, Physics, and Chemistry as well as the total. The highest score of each session will get the same percentile of 100, which is ideal. The percentile score has been used to prepare the JEE Main merit list. The percentile scores will be calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid ties among candidates with the same scores.

The JEE Main percentile score obtained by a candidate is determined only after applying normalisation to the marks obtained by a candidate. JEE Main Percentile scores indicate the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below that particular percentile in the examination. A percentile score is measured on a scale of 100 to 0 for each session of examinees. The formula to calculate JEE Mains marks vs percentile is

Q:   What is JEE Main cutoff for IIITs?
A:
The cutoff for IIITs vary for various branches and also category of students. Specialised branches like computer Science and electronics engineering has higher cutoff in comparison to other branches. Similarly, JEE Main cutoff for general category candidates is higher in comparison to OBC-NCL and SC/ST candidates. Candidates can check the JEE Main 2022 cutoff below for some top IIITs and branches. For detailed cutoff report, candidates can check Shiksha page. IIIT Allahabad IT Closing Rank Open Category: 5704 IIIT Allahabad ECE Closing Rank Open Category: 9700.
Q:   Is 75 percent marks in class 12 required for JEE Mains?
A:

Candidates need not have 75 percent marks in class 12 for appearing in JEE Main. As per the official brochure released by the NTA, there is no minimum percentage required for appearing in the JEE Main. The requirement of 75 percent marks need not be associated with appearing in the JEE Main exam.

It is to be understood that 75 percent marks is required for admission to institutes which include NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and IITs. Many institutes offer admission at 60% and even less, along with JEE Main. Candidates must clearly understand that the requirement of 75 percent marks in class 12 is only for taking admission in the institutes.

Q:   What are the types of JEE Main cutoff?
A:
JEE Main cutoff is of two types, one is qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced and the other is admission cutoff for the institutes. JEE Main qualifying cutoff is released by the NTA along with the result and is in the form of percentile scores. NTA releases JEE Main cutoff for a total of six categories which include unreserved (CRL), Gen-EWS, Open-PwD, OBC-NCL, SC and ST. JEE Main admission cutoff is released by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority JoSAA and is in the form of All India Rank.
Q:   How much is 120 marks in JEE Mains percentile?
A:
