Candidates who appeared for the JEE Main 2026 session 1 exam might be very curious about what their JEE Main 2026 percentile score will be based on the raw scores. Check here JEE Main 2026 marks vs percentile vs rank calculator with NTA official formula.

JEE Main 2026 Session 1 exam was conducted across ten shifts between January 21 to 28, 2026. NTA has released the session 1 results as percentiles (NTA scores) after shiftwise normalisation. As per the updated marks vs percentile data based on the session 1 result, 99+ percentile typically requires 160 to 200 marks; however, it mainly depends on shift difficulty, as easier shifts would have higher raw marks for the same percentile, and tougher shifts require less. Check what JEE Main 2026 marks vs percentile would be and the expected ranks for percentiles.

JEE Main Marks vs Percentile 2026 - Detailed Analysis (After Session 1 Result)

Candidates can refer to the table below for marks vs percentile of JEE Mains 2026 to get an idea of their percentile range in the JEE Main result.

From the table below, students can observe the following:

  • Significant Jump from Mid-Range to High-Range: A score in the range of 200 is likely to place you in a very strong percentile, like above the 90 or 95 percentile, but moving from a score of, say, 220 to 270 can dramatically increase your rank.
  • The Difference is in the Decimals: To move from the 99 percentile to the 99.999 percentile requires scoring in the very top brackets (e.g., above 280-290). In these ranges, you are competing for fractions of a percentile point.

JEE Main 2026 Marks vs Ranks - Detailed Analysis (After Session 1 Result)

In the table below for JEE Mains 2026 marks vs ranks estimation, candidates can observe the key points:

  1. Extremely Tight Competition at High Scores: At the top (example, scores from 300 to 291), a 10-point drop in your score only moves your rank by about 15 places. Every single mark matters! To move ahead by just a few ranks, you have to fight hard for every single point. This is the hardest zone to improve your rank in, but also where the best results are secured. Every single mark matters! To move ahead by just a few ranks, you have to fight hard for every single point. This is the hardest zone to improve your rank in, but also where the best results are secured.
  2. The Middle and Lower Range: In the middle and lower score ranges (e.g., below 150), losing just one score point can drop your rank by thousands, even tens of thousands, of places! A simple mistake that costs you 5 marks could cost you over 10,000 ranks!

Commonly asked questions
Q:   How much is 120 marks in JEE Mains percentile?
A:

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will declare the JEE Mains result 2026 in the form of percentile scores. Candidates can check here the previous year JEE Main marks vs percentile data to understand how much is 120 marks in JEE Main percentile.

As per the last year JEE Main marks vs percentile analysis, 120 marks would be around 95 to 97 percentile. However, the exact JEE Main 2025 percentile marks 120 would vary depending upon the highest number scored by the candidate in a particula shift and the total number candidates appeared in that particular shift.

Q:   What are the types of JEE Main cutoff?
A:
JEE Main cutoff is of two types, one is qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced and the other is admission cutoff for the institutes. JEE Main qualifying cutoff is released by the NTA along with the result and is in the form of percentile scores. NTA releases JEE Main cutoff for a total of six categories which include unreserved (CRL), Gen-EWS, Open-PwD, OBC-NCL, SC and ST. JEE Main admission cutoff is released by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority JoSAA and is in the form of All India Rank.
Q:   What is CRL in JEE Main Cutoff?
A:
CRL stands for the Common Rank List. NTA releases the cutoff in several categories one of which is CRL. Basically, CRL means unreserved category. Candidates belonging to unreserved category need to have JEE Main cutoff equal to or more than the CRL cutoff. The other categories for which cutoff is released are Gen-EWS, Open-PwD, OBC-NCL, SC and ST.

What is Percentile in JEE Main?

A percentile is not the same as a percentage. The Percentile Score indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored the same or lower raw scores than the particular Percentile in the exam. The percentile score of a candidate can also be understood as the percentage of candidates scoring below that candidate. The Percentile Scores in JEE Main are calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid the bunching effect and reduce ties. The topper of each session will get the same Percentile of 100. The marks obtained between the highest and lowest scores are also converted to appropriate Percentiles.

For Example -

Candidates attempts total of 20 questions in the exam

Total Marks in exam - 20 x 4 = 80

However, the result will not show the candidate's score as 80. It will show candidates' results in a percentile. The percentile of the candidate will be the percentage of candidates scoring marks below 80.

Why is the JEE Main Result Announced in Percentile?

The JEE Mains exam is conducted in two sessions in January and April, over 5 days with 2 shifts each day. There's a possibility that the question paper for a particular day can be more difficult or easier than any other day. To overcome this possible parity in difficulty level, normalisation is done. The normalised marks are not the actual marks obtained by the candidate but a comparative score obtained using a specially developed formula by NTA. The range of JEE Mains marks vs percentile is given below based on the previous years' trends and the normalisation formula used by NTA. The Percentile score will be the normalized score for the exam instead of the raw marks of the candidate.

JEE Main Normalisation: Percentile Calculation Formula Explained

After compiling the raw marks, the NTA applies the normalisation formula to get the percentile scores of a candidate for each subject - Maths, Physics, and Chemistry as well as the total. The highest score of each session will get the same percentile of 100, which is ideal. The percentile score has been used to prepare the JEE Main merit list. The percentile scores will be calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid ties among candidates with the same scores.

The JEE Main percentile score obtained by a candidate is determined only after applying normalisation to the marks obtained by a candidate. JEE Main Percentile scores indicate the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below that particular percentile in the examination. A percentile score is measured on a scale of 100 to 0 for each session of examinees. The formula to calculate JEE Mains marks vs percentile is

The rank obtained thugh JEE Main marks vs percentile data is an expected rank and not the actual rank. Candidates must note that the actual JEE Main rank is given in JEE Mains result release by the NTA.

Q:   What is JEE Main Cutoff?
A:

The JEE Main cutoff is the minimum percentile score required to qualify for the JEE Advanced exam. Its is released with the April session result.

Q:   Can I take admission in any institute if I do not get JEE Main cutoff marks?
A:

Candidates who do not score above JEE Main cutoff marks are eligible to take admissions in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs but not IITs. To appear in the admission process for IITs, candidates need to get marks above than the JEE Main cutoff and appear in JEE Advanced exam.

Expected JEE Mains 2026 Marks vs Percentile Subject Wise

NTA also converts the raw score of the candidates in Maths, Physics and Chemistry into percentile. Each subject in JEE Mains 2026 is of 100 marks. The raw score that the candidates get in each of these three subjects is converted into a percentile score.

However, students should note that the percentile score in each subject does not influence their ranks directly. The ranks are based on the overall percentile score only.

What is a Good Score in JEE Main 2026?

A good score in JEE Mains will mean a score that gets you admission to a good college or a college you are targeting. Here is a projection of what a good JEE main score is:

  • 250+ marks (~ 99.9+ percentile) -> This is an excellent score, placing you in the top 1% of roughly 14 lakh aspirants.
  • 200+ marks (99 percentile) -> High chance of securing CSE or ECE at top-tier NITs (like Warangal, Surathkal, or Rourkela) and IIITs. It also comfortably qualifies you for JEE Advanced.
  • 160 to 180 marks: (~97.5 to 99) ->  This is a strong score. Admission to core branches (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil) in top-tier NITs or CSE in mid-tier NITs and IIITs.
  • 100 to 120 marks (~95 percentile) -> Admission to lower-tier NITs/IIITs or non-core branches in mid-tier NITs. This is generally the cutoff range for the General category to qualify for JEE Advanced.
