Finding My Voice in a New World: A Small-Town Girl's DU Journey

I was admissitted to Philosophy Honors course at the Dyal Singh College, Delhi University. I completed my schooling at JNV in Madhya Pradesh, where girls were not allowed to interact with boys. So, when I joined DSC, DU - a co-ed college, I initially found it difficult to interact with boys, sit with them, or even talk with them. I felt very hesitant and uncomfortable.  But, eventually, I began to feel normal about it.

Falling Short, Rising Strong: My DU Experience

I am an extrovert, so, making friends was not an issue for me. I got the best professors at DSC, who taught me to focus not just in academics, but also, in sports and other extracurricular activities. Once, I could not appear for a test on time, but, my professors did not make it a big issue. They listened to me, understood the issue, and gave another date for the test.

Our first semester exams were held online. I ran out of time, so, I could not submit the last answer, which was for 18 marks. As a result, I could not get a good CGPA, which I should have. I tried a lot to get the marks for that question by mailing the authorities, but, they did not give me the marks for that question. I worked hard for my second semester, and finally, secured a good CGPA.

More Than a Performer: Lessons in Leadership and Balance

I was selected for my college's dance society through an audition, which was an exciting milestone. During my time there, I actively contributed to events like fests, farewells, and welcome parties. But, soon, it started affecting my studies because it required me to miss classes after 9 AM. So, to prioritise my studies, I decided to leave the society.

I have always been an active participant in my department’s functions, which has given me valuable experience in event coordination, teamwork, and communication. These experiences have equipped me with the skills to collaborate effectively with others, appreciate diverse perspectives, and handle responsibilities such as seeking approval from the director and senior management. Consequently, I have experienced both professional and personal growth as a result of these encounters.

Learning to Be Me: Self-Love, Strength, and Voice

Overall, the college journey has been full of learning and self-discovery. It helped me see myself as an individual and truly understand what ‘self’ means. I evolved from being someone uncertain to someone with a clearer sense of direction. My time in the Philosophy course at DU taught me how to overcome the fear of being alone, embrace self-love, express my thoughts confidently, and so much more. I am deeply grateful for everything I gained here. Today, I can stand up for myself, and I finally understand that true confidence comes from truly knowing who you are.
