Importance of Psychology in the field of Hospitality Management
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour while hospitality management or industry is the field of managing a hospitality business to ensure guests have a positive experience. Hence psychology plays a vital role for students who want to pursue a career in the field of hospitality, especially understanding of the subject social psychology.
To highlight a few areas that social psychology helps throw light or broaden a student's understanding of guests behaviour and reaction are as follows:
- Evaluating a guest's emotional quotient: allowing them to respond to guesses based on their assessments of the guests emotions and also keeping their emotions in check while handling guests is very important. e.g. one cannot let personal emotional baggage get in the way of one's interaction with a guest
- Forming first impressions: Positive first impressions is an integral part of receiving guests, the way one interacts with guests on the very first meet sets the tone to their future interactions with that individual.
- Perception: anticipating guests needs before the guests can even request is very important especially when the guests has been a frequent visitor or a VIP member etc.
