What is CA Foundation Exam?

ICAI CA Foundation course is the first level of Chartered Accountancy Training programme in India. Conducted and regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), this Chartered Accountant exam is the first level of the professional course imparting knowledge and training in all the aspects of accounting and taxation relevant for guiding a business organisation to run smoothly within the legal framework.

As per the University Grants Commission (UGC), CA qualification is considered equivalent to a postgraduate degree. The CA exam has three levels. To be certified as a Chartered Accountant, candidates have to clear all the course levels. Given below are the CA courses in order of first to third:

Q:   What is the difficulty level of CA Foundation syllabus?
A: 

The difficulty level of CA Foundation syllabus can be considered lower than CA Intermediate and CA Final but it is challenging as the syllabus is vast. Since it is the beginner's level course, it has topics that requires understanding of core concepts and principles. Given the extremely low pass percentage, CA Foundation is definitely not easy. It requires conceptual clarity of a number of topics related to business, accounting, taxation, laws, etc. and rigorous practice.

Q:   What is the syllabus of ICAI CA Foundation course?
A: 

ICAI CA Foundation is the first level of the course. This level may be considered the easiest of all the courses. The syllabus of ICAI CA Foundation includes the following topics:

  • Principles and Practice of Accounting
  • Business Laws and Business
  • Correspondence and Reporting
  • Business Mathematics
  • Logical Reasoning and Statistics
  • Business Economics
  • Business and Commercial Knowledge

Candidates need to clear all the papers relate to these subjects in order to move to Intermediate level. The minimum score requirement id 40 per cent in every paper.

Q:   What is the passing mark in CA courses?
A: 

Candidates need to score 40 per cent in each paper of every group/course level and 50 per cent in aggregate in all the papers of a group/course level. This minimum mark criterion is applicable to all three courses - CA Foundation, CA Intermediate and CA Final. Candidates cannot move to the next level of the Chartered Accountancy course until they clear the previous level. A very few percentage of candidates get a high score as the scores of All India toppers are usually below 75%. Candidates can take any number of attempts to clear a course level. The process includes practical training as well.

Before applying for CA Foundation exam, a candidate must check the eligibility requirements of the course. Check below to know the CA eligibility criteria for Foundation course:

  • Candidate should be registered in CA Foundation Course.
  • Candidate should be converted from CA CPT to CA Foundation before filling the exam form.
  • Candidate must have either passed class 12 from a recognized Board or appeared in the Class 12 exam.

Q:   Will there be advance reading time in CA Foundation exam?
A: 

There are four papers in CA Foundation exam. According to exam pattern, Paper 1 & 2 have subjective type questions, and Paper 3 & 4 have objective type questions. ICAI will only give 15 minutes advance reading time for Paper 1 and Paper 2. 

The question paper seal for Paper 3 and 4 will be opened at 2 PM, i.e., the exam commencement time only.

Q:   What is the CA Foundation examination fee for Indian centres?
A: 

Candidates applying to appear for CA Foundation exam at Indian centres will have to pay INR 1500 as registration fee. The late fee to be paid for Indian centres is INR 600.

Below are some useful preparation tips for candidates planning to appear for CA Foundation exam for upcoming session:

Q:   How is CA exam evaluated by the ICAI?
A: 

The ICAI follows a fair method of evaluation of exam papers of candidates. Be it CA Foundation, CA Intermediate or CA Final exam papers, the ICAI checks the paper on merit of the arguments made. In theory paper, the points are given on language of the answer, clarity of the argument and presentation. In practical papers, marks are awarded if the answer is supported by working notes. If the answer is presented well, clearly in tabular format with working notes (showing calculation), it is sure to get marks. Students say that working notes help in getting grace marks.

Q:   What is the minimum marks required to qualify CA Foundation exam?
A: 

To clear CA Foundation exam, a candidate must score at least 40% in each of the four papers and overall 50% in aggregate in all papers. If a candidate fails to do so, he/she will have to retake the exam.

Q:   Do I need to create fresh login for every attempt of CA Foundation exam?
A: 

No, candidates do not need to create fresh login for every attempt of CA Foundation exam. Students can register for the CA Foundation exam with the login created for the first time. The same login ID remains valid for the entire course. Students must note that to apply for the exam, they have to create a login at SSP portal of the ICAI exam and not on the home website. The SSP Portal login is valid upto 3 years for Foundation. Candidates can revalidate their login upon expiry by paying INR 300.

Q:   In which foreign cities CA exams are conducted?
A: 

ICAI certification for CA professionals has a lot of credibility across the world which is why many candidates living abroad pursue this course. Members of Indian communities who live abroad also pursue the CA course by ICAI. The exam is conducted in eight cities for all course levels. They are:

A: 

No, there is no paper-wise exemption in CA Foundation exam. Candidates must appear and clear all four papers in the same attempt. In case a candidate fails any of the paper/s, he or she must retake all papers again to pass this level.

The total pass percentage of CA Foundation exam conducted in January 2026 was only 19.23%. This means that candidates usually take more than one attempt to clear the exam.

Q:   Is there sectional time limit in ICAI CA Foundation exam?
A: 

No, there is no sectional time limit in CA Foundation exam. Candidates have to complete their Paper 1 and Paper 2 in 3 hours and answer questions of Paper 3 and Paper 4 in two hours.

Note: There is no break between two papers.

Q:   What is the time duration of ICAI CA exams?
A: 

The time duration of ICAI CA exams varies for each paper. For some papers, the duration is three hours whereas for some papers it is two hours. The time limit of CA Foundation paper 3 and 4 is two hours and for rest of the papers across levels is three hours. There is no sectional time limit in CA exams. 

Q:   How can I download my CA Foundation scorecard?
A: 

Candidates can download CA Foundation scorecards from ICAI website by using login credentials. Check the process to follow:

ICAI CA admit card contains personal information and test centre details which include candidate’s name, address, roll number, exam group, test city, medium of examination, registration number, mobile phone number, test centre address, photo and signature. Every candidate should check the information printed on the CA admit card for errors and misprint and in case of any, they must get it rectified by the testing agency before the commencement of the exam.

Incase, the photograph and signature of the candidate are not there on the ICAI CA admit card, they need to get their photograph & signature attested by a member of the Institute on his letterhead, indicating inter alia the name, registration number, exam, month and year of exam, roll number, medium, group, centre and postal address and carry the same to the examination centre, in duplicate, as proof of his/her identity.

Q:   Where can I check my CA result?

Candidates can check their results of CA Foundation, CA Intermediate and CA Final exams on the official websites of ICAI - icai.nic.in.

To check the result cum scorecard, candidates have to log in to their ICAI account. They can do so by using the login ID and password created at the time of exam form filling. Candidates can also check the merit list of any course through the same process.

CA Foundation 2026 Result

ICAI will release the CA Foundation result for the upcoming session after the successful administration of the exam. Candidates can check their scorecard by logging in at official website with their registration ID and roll number. ICAI also releases pass percentage, merit list and toppers' list, and opens a window to fill the CA Foundation marks verification form, a day after the release of the result (tentatively). A candidate will be considered PASS if he/she meets the qualifying marks criteria.

Q:   What is the fees for CA Intermediate exam?
A: 

The fees for CA Intermediate/ Intermediate (IPC) (Old and New Schemes) is INR 1,500 for single group and INR 2,700 for both groups, to be paid at the time of form submission. Candidates must pay the fee before deadline of form submission to avoid penalty of late fee (INR 600). The fee is non-refundable. The fee payment is to be done through credit card, debit card or net banking. Unless the fee is paid, the course or exam application form will not be submitted. Candidate will receive acknowledgement in mail upon successful transaction.

Q:   I attempted 2 wrong questions in CA Foundation exam. Will there be negative marking?
A: 

There are two types of questions asked in CA Foundation exam. Paper 1 and Paper 2 have subjective type questions. Paper 3 and Paper 4 have objective type questions.

There is negative marking of 0.25 for every incorrect answer in Paper 3 and Paper 4 only.

Q:   How many times is ICAI CA exam held in a year?
A: 

CA exams for all the three levels are being held thrice in a year from 2025. The first phase exams are held in May and June and the second phase exams are held in September. The third phase exam is held in January. Registrations for the May-June exams is held in February-March and registrations for September exam is done in July and registration for January exam is done in October-November. Candidates can register and appear for the exam as per their preparation and articleship completion. For any phase of exam, they need to fill the form and pay exam fee through registered login ID.

Q:   Are ICAI CA Foundation, Intermediate and Final results announced on the same day?
A: 

The CA Intermediate and Final exam results are announced on the same day and CA Foundation result is announced on a separate date. The CA Foundation exam results are announced a few days after the announcement of CA Intermediate and CA Final results for a particular session. For example, the CA Inter and CA Final results of May 2023 were released in July and CA Foundation result of the same session was announced in August 2023. The CA result announcement date for each course is announced by the ICAI beforehand. The announcement is made on the website and social media platforms so that students know the when to download their scorecards.

Q:   Is there any change in the CA Foundation syllabus?
A: 

No, there is no change in the syllabus of any of the CA papers for sessions of 2024. The course training and examinations for 2024 are based on the previously available CA syllabus. The syllabus and sample questions papers can be downloaded from the ICAI CA website. It is also shared with students upon registration. To further familiarize candidates with the syllabus of CA Foundation, CA Intermediate and CA Final courses, the ICAI conducts mock test sessions which registered candidates can take as per the schedule.

Q:   What is the criteria of shortlisting by the companies for ICAI CA placements?
A: 

The criteria for shortlisting candidates for placements is determined by participating organizations themselves. The maximum number of shortlisting by recruiting entities cannot exceed 10 times the number of vacancies they declared for Chartered Accountancy.

Also, the participating organisations usually shortlist candidates depending upon overall educational qualifications, number of attempts, other attributes, Completion of Articleship training and in case a greater number of candidates qualify selection criteria companies may choose on random basis as per their choice.

Organisations participating in Campus Placement Programme prefer that the candidates selected by them should be ready to join the organisations immediately and should not claim that their Articleship training is pending and require more time to join.

Q:   Is there negative marking in CA Foundation exam?
A: 

There is no negative marking in Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the CA Foundation course as they are subjective papers. In Paper3 and Paper 4, which have objective type questions, there is negative marking of 1/4th mark for incorrect attempt. Total marks per paper is 100. Every question carries 1 mark. Thus, students must mark answers carefully in Paper 3 and 4, to avoid negative marking. They must not do guess work.

Q:   What is the CA Foundation form correction process?
A: 

CA Foundation form correction window opens the next day of application form submission deadline. The form correction remains open for 2 days during which candidates can login to SSP portal and edit course group, test city and medium of exam. No other field of the CA Foundation application form is editable. If any student wishes to update their photo, they can do so at the SSP portal but before the application form submission.

Q:   How to get photo changed on CA Foundation admit card?
A: 

If the photo printed on the CA Foundation admit card is unclear, candidates will need to reach out to the examination conducting body and get it rectified before the exam dates. It is very important to have clear photo and signature on the CA Foundation admit card as it is the main document of identification of students.

Q:   What is the eligibility criteria for pursuing CA course?
A: 

The minimum eligibility criteria for pursuing CA course is class 12 pass or equivalent from a recognised institute or university. Candidates who have completed graduation can directly take admission at CA Intermediate level. Check below:

  • Candidates who have passed Class 12 or equivalent examination from a recognised board are eligible.

 Candidates who have:

  • Registered with Board of Studies on or before 30 June of the examination year
  • Changed to CA Foundation Course with Board of Studies of ICAI on or before September 7 of the examination year.

CA Intermediate Eligibility Criteria 

  • Candidates who have passed CA Foundation examination or equivalent examination are eligible
  • Candidates who have registered for previous CA Intermediate exam as per syllabus under paragraph 2 or 2A of Schedule B or Professional Education (Course-II), Professional Competence Course and converted into Intermediate (IPC) Course/ Accounting Technician Course (ATC) are eligible
  • Candidates who have completed graduation or post-graduation in any stream from a recognised institute of India are also eligible

CA Final Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates who have passed the CA Intermediate examination or Professional Education Examination – II/PCC/IPCC, are eligible to apply for the CA Final exam
  • They must also have completed 3 years or 3½ years or must be due to complete, as the case may be, of article training as on the date of filling the form
  • For PE-II stream student and PE-II stream students converted to IPCC – Also, they must be serving the last twelve months of articled training including excess leave, if any, and due to complete 3 years on or before October 31 of the examination year.
  • For PCC stream students - The candidate must be serving the last six months of articled training including excess leave if any, and due to complete 3½ years on or before 30th April of the examination year
  • For Intermediate IPCC students – The candidate must be serving the last six months of training including excess leave if any, and due to complete 3 years on or before April 30 of the examination year.
  • For students converted from PE-II to PCC as well as for students converted from PE-II to PCC and then to IPCC - The candidate must be serving the last twelve months of training including excess leave if any, and due to complete 3½ years articles on or before October 31 of the examination year.
  • Candidates who have taken termination are advised to re-register for the balance period of training

Q:   What is Integrated Professional Competence Course or IPCC in CA?
A: 

The Integrated Professional Competence Course or IPCC examination is an improvised version of the PCC examination for Chartered Accountants in India. A student can register for IPCC after completing the CA CPT (Foundation) exam, without article registration.

After clearing the Group-I papers of the IPCC, the aspirant can register for the articles. Under the new scheme of IPCC, the student is eligible to appear for the final year examination during their last six months of their article ship.

All the candidates who had registered for the PCC examination on or before January 2009 were eligible to appear in the new version of the IPCC examination. They have to complete the nine months of the study course and a hundred hours of orientation course and Information Technology Training before taking up the final Group-II examination of CA Intermediate course.
