The answer to this question of whether an average student can get into IIM can be both yes and no depending on the definition of an average student.
- Based on Academics (Class 10/ Class 12/ Graduation): While a student with average scores in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation with a good CAT score certainly has good chances of getting a call from IIM-A, chances are less for someone with an average CAT score.
- Based on student category (General or Reserved): While it is tough for a General category average student to grab a seat at IIM due to high score requirements, a reserved category student can get admission being at average scores as well.

IIM Bangalore Course and Fee FAQs 2025
No matter how much a student secures in Class 12, IIM Bangalore, while shortlisting candidates for MBA follows a normalization process and gives weightage to all exam scores, i.e., Class 10, Class 12 or graduation. The process of normalisation is explained below:
- For IIM Bangalore PGP admission, a shortlist will be prepared comprising the names of candidates who have secured a pre-determined minimum score on all sections of CAT.
- All the subsequent processing, standardization and selection are limited to candidates selected to the first short list alone. Therefore, the CAT score alone is used as the basis for arriving at the first short list
- For all candidates in the first shortlist, a candidate’s percentage scores in the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams are adjusted by dividing each such score by the 90th percentile score obtained in that board. For this purpose, the database of Class 10 and Class 12 scores of all CAT applicants of the past two years is used for identifying the 90th percentile score for each Class 10 and Class 12 scores board.
For admission to IIM Bangalore for the flagship MBA (or PGP) course, the result of CAT 2023 can be expected by the last week of December 2023 (If the CAT conducting body follows the trend as in 2022). However, if the trend is not followed, the same will most probably be out by the first week of January 2024. After the release of result, the exam takers will be able to download their CAT scorecards from the official website using their login credentials for IIM Bangalore admission.

Common Admission Test or CAT is a national-level management aptitude test conducted by IIM for admission to MBA. Each year, over 2.3 Lacs candidates take the CAT exam, which is accepted by the IIMs and top MBA colleges in India. It is important to apply strict selection criteria to identify the top candidates among them. That's why, the CAT exam is tougher than other MBA entrance exams. Even though the syllabus of CAT is the same as that of other MBA entrance exams, the question paper set by the IIM faculty always has tough questions. Moreover, CAT has a sectional time limit for each section which is not there in any other exam except XAT.
To be selected in IIM Bangalore, candidates are required to have a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 50% or an equivalent CGPA (45% for candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PwD category). IIM Bangalore admission 2024 is completely entrance-based. Admission to the flagship course, i.e., the MBA of IIM Bangalore, is based on a valid score in the CAT exam, followed by a personal interview (PI) and written ability test (What) round. Admission to EPGP course is based on GRE/ GMAT/ IIMB Test scores. It is not possible to join IIM Bangalore directly after Class 12 since the institute mostly offers postgraduate and doctoral level programmes in the field of Management. However, a student who has completed his/ her Class 12 can complete the final graduation and then look out for admission to IIM-B.

Similarly for other courses, applicants who meet the set eligibility need to go through the institute-specific selection process and get shortlisted. After completion of the selection rounds, a category-wise merit list is released based on the Final Composite Score. The provisional admission offers are made accordingly, adhering to the reservation norms.
