Q:   Can I join IIM Bangalore after Class 12?

A:

It is not possible to join IIM Bangalore directly after Class 12 since the institute mostly offers postgraduate and doctoral level programmes in the field of Management. However, a student who has completed his/ her Class 12 can complete the final graduation and then look out for admission to IIM-B.

The institute offers MBA, Executive MBA, and other courses at PG, doctoral and certificate level courses in the field of Management. Interested applicants are required to go through the national-level entrances and then appear for the institute-level selection rounds for final admission. Admission to the flagship course, i.e. MBA of IIM Bangalore is based on a valid score in the CAT exam, followed by a Personal Interview (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT) round. Q:   What is the CAT cutoff required to get into IIM Bangalore?

A:

IIM Bangalore considers two kinds of CAT scores for MBA admission - Qualifying and Final score. Qualifying CAT score is the minimum sectional and overall CAT score used to shortlist students for the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. Candidates above minimum cutoffs in the sectional percentile ranks, the overall percentile rank and having a positive (greater than zero) raw score in all sections of CAT are considered for the next stage. The final CAT score is cutoffs are the basis of which the candidates are called for final selection after the AWT and PI rounds are over. The overall CAT qualifying cutoff for 2022 admission at IIM-B stood at 85 for General category candidates while the final cutoff is considered to stand between 99 and 100 percentile. For other category candidates, this requirement is comparatively low. Check out more details on IIM-Bangalore Cutoff here.

Q:   Can an average student get into an IIM?

A:

The answer to this question of whether an average student can get into IIM can be both yes and no depending on the definition of an average student.

  • Based on Academics (Class 10/ Class 12/ Graduation): While a student with average scores in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation with a good CAT score certainly has good chances of getting a call from IIM-A, chances are less for someone with an average CAT score.
  • Based on student category (General or Reserved): While it is tough for a General category average student to grab a seat at IIM due to high score requirements, a reserved category student can get admission being at average scores as well.
  • Based on past work experience, diversity and other factors: Gender and academic diversity is also a factor on which students are shortlisted at IIM. IIMs judge the past academic category based on the degree obtained by the students before MBA and then a weightage is allotted based on that. For Engineers, the percentage for scoring the highest marks is higher as compared with other streams
  • Performance in selection rounds: Once you make it to the final selection rounds, i.e., AWT/PI process, it can be considered a fresh start. At this stage, students can forget their past average-ness but definitely require good grasp over the past subjects as academics-related questions are asked in the interview.

Based on the above factors, it can be considered that while getting into top Management institutes, such as IIM is extremely tough, the past performance, CAT performance, student category and a lot of factors can be the reasons for a student to receive that final call.

On Admission

Q:   When should I start preparing for CAT exam?

A:

Aspirants should start preparing for CAT exam at least nine months in before the test date. CAT preparation requires long-term planning thus one must start early. The best time to start CAT preparation is in March. Starting early will also help you assess that whether you need to join a coaching institute or not.

Divide your preparation into two phases -

  1. Covering the CAT syllabus
  2. Practicing mock tests, sample questions and revision.

The CAT syllabus includes the following topics:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension: Parajumbles, Parasummary, Sentence Completion and Inferences, Questions based on passages, para meaning, order of sentences
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning: Tables, Graphs, Pie Charts, Venn Diagram, Blood Relation, Seating Arrangement, Caselets and Syllogism

  • Quantitative Aptitude for CAT by Nishit Sinha
  • Quantitative Aptitude Quantum CAT by Sarvesh Sharma
  • Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations by Abhijit Guha.

Q:   What makes CAT tougher than other MBA entrance exams?

A:
CAT exam is a national level MBA entrance exam conducted by the IIM. Every year, over 2.3 Lacs candidates apply for it. The CAT score is accepted by the Iims and all top MBA colleges in India. To select the best candidates from over 2.3 Lacs test takers there is a need for tough criteria. That's why, the CAT exam is tougher than other MBA entrance exams. Even though the syllabus of CAT is same as that of other MBA entrance exams, the question paper set by the IIM faculty always has tough questions. Moreover, CAT has sectional time limit for each section which is not there in any other exam expect XAT. Having a time limit for each section adds pressure on candidates to complete solving adequate number of questions in a section within the time limit. If a student is weak in a particular subject, they can't use the time as per their need. CAT's Reading Comprehension passages are long and dense unlike other MBA exams. This is one more reason why most candidates feel CAT is tougher than any other MBA entrance exam.

Infrastructure: In this college, the infrastructure was very good. It provides a Wi-Fi room, playground, badminton court, and tennis courts. The classrooms were technologically advanced. All classes provide digital cameras. The hostel room was available, and I lived in block A. The hostel maid took good care of the students.

Overall, it is a good experience.
Placements: All 512 students get placed. The highest package offered is INR 1 crore, and the average is INR 25 lakh. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Accenture, TCS, HUL, P&G, Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Cogoport, NPCI, JPMC, and GS are the top recruiting companies. All students got internships. The top roles offered are Sr.Associate at Consulting companies and Sales and Marketing at FMCG.
Infrastructure: WiFi coverage is available throughout campus. There is a 3-story library and AC classrooms. The food at the mess is average. Four meals a day are provided. Extra items on some days are charged additionally; the juice counter is charged additionally. A pharmacy is present on campus. Apollo Hospital is nearby. There are good sports grounds and courts. Some sports equipment is broken or not good. It's best to bring your own rackets.
Faculty: Some professors are very good and inspiring. The overall faculty is average. The course curriculum is good enough but does not include recent updates. Some courses give a practical flavor; otherwise, many courses are very theoretical and do not help with real-life industry experience. The exams are slightly hard, and there is relative grading.
Other: The college is good in terms of people, amenities, and location. Good fests, speaker sessions, clubs, and societies are there. The workload is hectic initially, but one learns to cope with time. The administration body, like most colleges, interferes with everything on campus; reforms or changes in personnel would benefit the college.

Q:   Does IIM Bangalore consider 12th marks?

A:

No matter how much a student secures in Class 12, IIM Bangalore, while shortlisting candidates for MBA follows a normalization process and gives weightage to all exam scores, i.e., Class 10, Class 12 or graduation. The process of normalisation is explained below:

  1. For IIM Bangalore PGP admission 2024, a shortlist will be prepared comprising the names of candidates who have secured a pre-determined minimum score on all sections of CAT 2023 exam.
  2. All the subsequent processing, standardization and selection are limited to candidates selected to the first short list alone. Therefore, the CAT score alone is used as the basis for arriving at the first short list
  3. For all candidates in the first shortlist, a candidate’s percentage scores in the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams are adjusted by dividing each such score by the 90th percentile score obtained in that board. For this purpose, the database of Class 10 and Class 12 scores of all CAT applicants of the past two years is used for identifying the 90th percentile score for each Class 10 and Class 12 scores board.
  4. The weightage allocated to each selection parameter is as follows:

10%

Class 12
