Jain University offers courses to fill job market skill gap
Colleges in Bangalore are shifting their focus from only imparting bookish knowledge to bridging the skill gap that exists in the job market. Furthermore, in this respect, the attention is not just laid upon engineering students, but also on graduates in science and commerce.
It has been observed that there is a shortage of skilled graduates in the job market, and keeping in mind the same, a few colleges in Bangalore have agreed upon offering new disciplines. Jain University is one of the Universities that is aiming at filling the huge skill gap.

According to SA Hariprasad, the Director of Jain University School of Engineering and Technology, data science and Internet of Things (IoT) are two areas that have completely changed the way governments, businesses and consumers connect with the world. To be able to offer skills demanded by the job market, Jain University will offer BTech courses allowing students to specialise in both data science and IoT.
Adding to this SA Hariprasad said that going by the current scenario, it is estimated that by 2019, there would be around 1.5 million jobs in data science and IoT. Jain University is aiming at making their students ready for the future. Also, since there are not many Universities offering such courses, resulting in enormous skill gap.
According to a Bangalore University survey last year, it was observed that the skill gap existed not only among the students who were engineering graduates, but also among the science and commerce graduates.
Apart from Jain University, there are a few other Universities who are focusing on making their students ready to work in the future market. The National Law School of India University launched a Master’s programme in public policy and the Mount Carmel College started a Master’s in Nano science and technology.
Adding to the list was PES University which launched MSc in applied economics where economics will be treated as science. The University's Centre for Developmental Studies is in the process of setting up physics lab-like laboratory that will allow students to apply the concepts and see the results. Another University offering a different course is Christ University that launched a BA in western classical music along with psychology and English studies – this is claimed as the only such course in the country.
