"The best way to prepare for the entrance test is your hard work and proper guidance", says Aditya Varma from IET Lucknow

IET Lucknow

I am going to share all my experiences from my academic years to the present time.

Career Decisions

I was always interested in Mathematics, so I chose PCM as my main subject to study in the intermediate. I was also the topper of my college and 9th district ranker, I was a bit bright since my childhood. When I was in class 11th, I came to know about engineering and its entrance examinations in detail through my coaching teacher. I searched more about these things and then I decided to go for engineering.

I did not go through any foundation course because I am from UP Board. My feeling at that time was that if I join the coaching now, then my Boards may get affected, so I decided to focus on my academic studies during 11th and 12th. After completion of 12th, I took a one-year gap to join a target course from a coaching institute in my hometown, Varanasi. I had not decided my branch at that time; I just wanted to join an IIT or the best NIT (that is the dream of every candidate).

Exam tips & admission journey

I am currently studying Electronics & Communication Engineering at Institute of Engineering and Technology, Sitapur Road, Lucknow. It is affiliated to AKTU (APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University) also known as UPTU. Every year, AKTU conducts an all-India level exam, UPSEE, for admission to different colleges of AKTU. I secured a rank of 2687 (GN) and 511 (OBC) in UPSEE examination 2016 and got IET Lucknow in the 2nd round of counselling. At the same time, I decided to take admission in that college (one can go up till the last round of counselling).

As mentioned above, I had joined a one-year classroom program in coaching to prepare for JEE Main + JEE Advanced at my hometown, Varanasi.

The best way to prepare for the entrance test is ‘your hard work + a proper guideline’. You can take guidance from any good coaching institute. I must say here that a coaching institute is very important to prepare for engineering examinations, because the competition is very high. You have to learn more and efficiently in a short duration. It could be possible easily with the help of a coaching as compared to your self-study.

My tips for getting admission and making the most out of the college

Firstly, prepare for the entrance by giving your 100% to secure the best rank you can. Now, choose the best college falling in that rank. It is most important to make a proper choice while choice-filling, otherwise, all your hard work gets wasted. To find the best colleges for you, you can Google the list and cut-off of the top colleges and universities. Rank-wise lists of colleges are also available on their official websites. If these things are not enough for you, you can take the help of some counselling experts. Some online websites are also available, which provide this facility.

My learning & insights

I must say that my college life has been going great till now. I have currently completed 2 years of my BTech and these two years were the best part of my life. Engineering life is the perfect mixture of studies and other activities. You will definitely enjoy and come out with the best version of yourself if you are sincere. Being sincere not just means that you should study aloof from the world; according to me, sincerity is a balance mixture of seriousness and happiness.

Jobs are offered after the completion of the 3rd year, so I cannot say much about this. Although your learning must be continued all the time, one should be active in all academic, co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Academics is the study of the course during the semester. Getting involved in co-curricular activities means being active and curious about what you studied, that is, practical knowledge of everything is very important. Extracurricular activities involves being active in things other than studies and academics such as in different technical, management and literary fests. All these things help you develop yourself in all directions. As an ECE student, I suggest you to go through Robotics, IoT, Circuit Designing, Computer Vision, Data Science, etc. After that, you can also build your career in these fields.

I am not sure enough about my career aspects, although the way that I am following till now is taking me to the right and perfect goal (for me). I should say here that one must follow his/her passion accordingly, and your road map will build automatically.

The mistake that I made were- when filling the answer sheet of UPSEE, I filled the answers of questions 1, 2 and 3 in circles of 51, 52 and 53; so three of my questions were wrong automatically and my rank was affected by a lot (varied by about 400-500). So, I suggest you to fill the answer sheet properly. Other than this, I didn’t make any major mistake. And definitely, mistakes are the best way to learn, so I believe “Try not to make mistakes but if they are made, don’t regret making them and learn from them”.

College education is the base of what you will do in your future and career. It provides both practical and theoretical knowledge, which is used in direct or indirect ways. Most importantly, a positive environment is created in the college to learn better and new things. And from here, new innovations come.

Education is like a chain. If I look back, then I realize that all the previous concepts come in use for future problems. The difference is that you learn in depth about things while pursuing higher education. You can say that each and every moment of your life is important, so utilize and enjoy each moment.

My tip for career selection is that before choosing any field, analyze about that field and if you feel that you are interested in that field, take further steps because your interest plays a very important role.
