Why And How To Start JEE Preparation In Class 9th
By Aman Goel
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two of the most prestigious exams in our country. Considering its vast syllabus and paper difficulty level clearing JEE is not easy. It requires you to be consistent and hard working for a long time( i.e. at least 2 years). The basic foundation of PCM which you will study during classes 11 and 12 lies in the syllabus of Classes 9 and 10. The syllabus of class 9 (Physics and Chemistry) holds similarities with that of class 11 and that of class 10 to class 12. Classes 9th and 10th contain the basic syllabus of subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Students are generally told that class 11th syllabus is too difficult for a class 9th kid to understand but that’s not the case. If you look at the syllabus, you already learn Newton’s law, Trigonometry, the Periodic table in class 9. You just have to dive deeper into further classes. So, if you cover even a small fraction of it in your early days that won’t hurt.
Why start early in class 9
- You will have an edge over your peers when you start actual preparation from Class 11. As most of them will have difficulty understanding initial concepts, you will find it easy and can move to solve harder problems.
- If you see, you have 4 years from now for JEE exams. If utilized properly, it can make a huge difference.
- I am not saying to not have fun and only study. Do have fun, play every day but try to find some time for this. You will see the difference later.
- Also, this will help you in other exams like Olympiads and NTSE.
How to start preparing?
- You will mostly find the school syllabus easy. You have to study only for half the syllabus each semester. So, after doing your schoolwork and other extracurricular activities, you may be leftover with some time. You can use this time. But firstly, the foundation is very important. If you are facing difficulty in PCM of classes 9 and 10 then don’t do this now. Give more time to be confident in that first then move for difficult concepts. So, it is very important that you understand everything taught in school very clearly, as cracking the school exams is not a difficult job.
- Make sure you understand the basic topics in these subjects. A clear understanding of each and every topic in classes 9 and 10 can help you to solve problems for JEE in the 11th and 12th classes. Clear all your doubts and take the help of teachers if you face any difficulties in understanding any particular topic taught. Remember that idea about a topic.
- Solving problems within the time limit is one of the key factors determining your score in any exam. The key to scoring in JEE exams is to solve problems accurately within a fixed time frame. This is possible only when you solve more and more problems within a fixed given time. Identify your strength and weakness while studying these subjects. Take a note of it and try to clear all your doubts. The idea is to be able to figure out the topics that seem difficult to you and then work on it for further improvement. You have a lot of time to do that.
- Make few friends who aim for the same. Having a cool study circle is great. They will help you at times when you face difficulty. Try to explain something you learn to your friends. This is the best way to retain the concepts for a long time.
- Once you are clear with the fundamental concepts, then only you can go for complicated concepts and problems in these subjects. The basic knowledge of the subjects is essential to solving any problem for this exam.
- If you start attempting different exams like NTSE, NSO, IMO, and many others from your school time, you won’t fear exams anymore. However, attempt these exams sincerely, only then you would improve yourself. Giving these exams would also introduce you competition to students all across the country, and you will not be confined just to your class. I have seen many students suffering from ‘Exam phobia’, which is the main reason that despite knowing the concepts, they don’t perform up to their potential in the exam. Attempting different exams will help you decrease this fear and give you chances to improve.
There are a few topics in classes 9 and 10 which are common to the JEE syllabus. You should learn these chapters now at an advanced level. This includes :

Clearing the JEE Main exam in first attempt is not a difficult task. Several students clear JEE Main while in class 12. One thing that makes it easy to clear JEE Main with class 12 is that students are in regular touch of most JEE syllabus. To score good marks in JEE Main in the first attempt, it is advised that you study class 11 and 12 topics thoroughly, clear all the concepts and solve mock test papers. Also, NCERT books which you study in class 11 and 12 are the best books for JEE Main preparation. Students must study NCERT properly and solve all the questions in the book and do not memorize the concepts as some students do rather understand the concepts.
Chemistry- Matter and its nature, and States of Matter, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Atomic Structure, Environmental Chemistry(this has mostly the rote learning part, you may skip this for now).
Maths- Quadratic equations, Probability(only basic questions for now), Co-ordinate Geometry, Trigonometry
I hope that’s more than enough to cover during your classes 9 and 10. I am not saying that learn all of it. To learn what you can and is possible for you without getting distracted from your actual course.
Many students often say that till the 10th class everything was very easy and after that when they enter the class 11th, they feel the syllabus is quite difficult and they are not able to completely cope up with it. And actually, there is a lot of difference in studies till 10th and after that. So students generally can’t cope-up with the syllabus in 11th and 12th, because of the spoon-feeding and easy syllabus that they go through till class 10th.
To seek admission to the BTech programme offered at IIT Madras, candidates need to visit the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and fill out the application form in online mode for JEE Main. For other courses such as MSc, MTech, BS-MS (Dual Degree) etc., candidates must visit the official website of the respective national-level entrance exam conducting bodies and fill out the application form in online mode. IIT Madras admission to most of the courses is entrance-based.
Start laying your foundation early and you will have an easy time during the 11 and 12th (relatively).

The time period required to complete the JEE Main preparation depends mainly on the students. Every student has their own pace of study. Ideally, 6-month time is good enough to complete the JEE Main preparation. Students who have started preparing from class 11 or 12 can easily prepare for JEE Main in 6 months considering the topics of JEE syllabus have already been studied in classes 11 and 12.
JEE Main preparation is most effective with classes 11 and 12 as almost 90-95 percent of topics are similar in both exams. This way students can easily complete the entire JEE Main syllabus as well as the syllabus of classes 11 and 12. After the board exams, students get 1-2 months' time where they can focus entirely on JEE Main. Students who have started late for the JEE Main exam can make a 6-month plan where in the first three months they have to focus on revising the syllabus studied in classes 11 and 12. In the next two months focus on solving questions of JEE Main and analyzing the mistakes being made, if any. The last month should be focused on solving mock tests and JEE Main previous year question papers.
