Lawyers or advocates must appear before the Supreme Court, High Courts, District Courts, or tribunals in a formal dress code. Dress Code for Male Lawyers/Advocates in India

The male advocate or lawyer's uniform is way beyond just the black coat. Check the complete dress code below

  • Black buttoned-up coat or black blazer
  • White shirt with stiff or soft collar
  • White advocate bands
  • Black trousers
  • Black socks
  • Black formal shoes

In several courts, the dress code is slightly revised in the summer to accommodate the weather. However, the black coat is compulsory in air-conditioned courtrooms and for higher judiciary appearances unless exempted.

Dress Code for Female Lawyers/Advocates in India

For the female advocates, there is some flexibility in attire while maintaining the professional standards set by the Bar Council of India. Check the list of attires allowed to female lawyers/advocates here
  • Black coat or blazer
  • White blouse/ shirt/ saree
  • White advocate bands
  • Black trousers
  • Salwar-kameez or churidar in white or sober colours
  • Black dupatta (in some courts)

While the female lawyers have an option, the attire must remain simple, formal, and professional.

Dress Code for Senior Advocates

While the dress code for senior advocates is also more or less the same, there are some additions. Senior Advocates designated by the Supreme Court or High Courts wear a gown in addition to the standard advocate attire. The gown signifies seniority, experience, and recognition by the court.
