Lawyer & Advocate Dress Code in India 2026 (Male & Female Uniform)

Thinking about becoming a lawyer? Apart from getting admission to law college, one of the things that inspires many candidates to become lawyers is a black coat. Lawyers or advocates must appear before the Supreme Court, High Courts, District Courts, or tribunals in a formal dress code. No advocate enrolled with the State Bar Council is allowed to present a case or attend any legal proceedings in any court of law across the country without the prescribed attire. The male advocate or lawyer's uniform is way beyond just the black coat. Check the complete dress code below

• Black buttoned-up coat or black blazer
• White shirt with stiff or soft collar
• White advocate bands
• Black trousers
• Black socks
• Black formal shoes

In several courts, the dress code is slightly revised in the summer to accommodate the weather. However, the black coat is compulsory in air-conditioned courtrooms and for higher judiciary appearances unless exempted.

Dress Code for Female Lawyers/Advocates in India

• Black coat or blazer
• White blouse/ shirt/ saree
• White advocate bands
• Black trousers
• Salwar-kameez or churidar in white or sober colours
• Black dupatta (in some courts)

While the female lawyers have an option, the attire must remain simple, formal, and professional.

Dress Code for Senior Advocates

While the dress code for senior advocates is also more or less the same, there are some additions. Senior Advocates designated by the Supreme Court or High Courts wear a gown in addition to the standard advocate attire. The gown signifies seniority, experience, and recognition by the court.

When is the Gown Worn?

• During appearances in High Courts
• In the Supreme Court
• During ceremonial proceedings
• In constitutional benches or important matters

Dress Code Restrictions for Advocates/Lawyers

As per the rules set by the Bar Council of India, advocates or Lawyers are expected to avoid

Courtrooms require a dignified and professional appearance at all times.

Dress Code for Law Interns

For male law interns, the dress code is:

• White shirt
• Black trousers
• Black blazer or coat
• Formal shoes

Female interns may wear:

• White kurta with black blazer
• Saree
• Formal western attire with advocate-style dress standards

Many courts insist on formal black-and-white attire even for interns.

Improper courtroom clothes may lead to
