The Bar Council of Gujarat is an "Autonomous Statutory Body" that was formed on August 16, 1961, under the Advocates Act, 1961 to represent lawyers practicing law in Gujarat. It holds significant powers, duties and functions to comply with its statutory duties as per the Advocates Act, 1961, the Gujarat Advocates’ Welfare Fund Act, 1961 and the rules formed and imposed by the "Bar Council of India." The number of advocates is increasing in Gujarat. Thus, the number of advocates enrolling in the Bar Council of Gujarat is increasing rapidly. Bar Council of Gujarat Functions

As per Section 6 of Advocates Act, 1961, the Bar Council of Gujarat has the following functions: 

1. The functions of a State Bar Council shall be:

  • To admit persons as advocates on its roll;
  • To prepare and maintain such roll;
  • To entertain and determine cases of misconduct against advocates on its roll;
  • To safeguard the rights, privileges and interests of advocates on its roll;
  • To promote the growth of Bar Associations for the purposes of effective implementation of the welfare schemes referred to in clause (a) of sub-section (2) of this section and clause (a) of sub-section (2) of Section 7;]
  • To promote and support law reform;
  • To conduct seminars and organise talks on legal topics by–eminent jurists and publish journals and papers of legal interest;
  • To organise legal aid to the poor in the prescribed manner;
  • To manage and invest the funds of the Bar Council;
  • To provide for the election of its members;
  • To visit and inspect Universities in accordance with the directions given under clause (i) of sub-section (1) of Section 7
  • To perform all other functions conferred on it by or under this Act,
  • To do all other things necessary for discharging the aforesaid functions.

3. A State Bar Council may receive any grants, donations, gifts or benefactions for all or any of the purposes specified in subsection (2) which shall be credited to the appropriate fund or funds constituted under that sub-section.

Q:   I have 42% marks in my final LLB exams. Can I apply for AIBE exam? Am I eligible?
A:
Based on the eligibility criteria, it appears that you may not be eligible to apply for the AIBE exam, as you have mentioned that you have secured 42% marks in your final LL.B. Exam. However, you may check with the respective State Bar Councils in your state, as the eligibility criteria may vary from state to state.
Q:   How many city preferences can a candidate submit while selecting AIBE center?
A:

Candidates can submit maximum 3 preferences for AIBE centre. Choosing preference for exam centre is mandatory to submit AIBE application. Candidates will get to know about allotment of exact centre once the admit card is released. BCI releases admit card online comprising crucial details about exam including name and address of AIBE centre. The admit card can be downloaded from the official website after its release. To download AIBE admit card, candidates need application ID, password, and Exam Unique Code (EUC).

Q:   How to get Certificate of practice after AIBE?
A:

To get the Certificate of Practice (COP) after passing the All India Bar Examination AIBE you need to follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Register with the Bar Council of India: You need to register yourself with the Bar Council of India by submitting the AIBE scorecard, your law degree Certificate and other relevant documents. You will also need to pay the registration fee and fulfill any other requirements specified by the Bar Council of India.
  2. Apply for the Certificate of Practice: After registering with the Bar Council of India, you can apply for the Certificate of Practice by submitting an application along with the required documents such as your identity proof, address proof, and a declaration that you have not been convicted of any criminal offense or professional misconduct.
  3. Pay the fees: You need to pay the prescribed fees for the issuance of the Certificate of Practice.
  4. Verification of documents: The Bar Council of India will verify all the documents submitted by you to ensure that they are authentic.
  5. Issuance of Certificate of Practice: Once your application and documents are verified, the Bar Council of India will issue you the Certificate of Practice. Why do I need to register with the Bar Council of Gujarat? 

Before enrolling with the State Bar Council of Gujarat, you need to know why you need to register with this organisation. If you want to become an advocate and practice law in Gujarat, it is mandatory to register with the Bar Council of Gujarat after passing a 5-year LLB or 3-year LLB. Then, first, you will have to take and pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) and obtain a "Certificate of Practice" (COP). After receiving this COP, you can work as an individual advocate or a junior advocate under senior advocates. Documents Required for Registration with the Bar Council of Gujarat

Before enrolling in the Bar Council of Gujarat, you must have the following documents:

  • Class 10th marksheet and passing certificate
  • Class 12th marksheet and passing certificate
  • Employment certificate (if required, only for those who are / were working professionals)
  • 3-year / 5-year LLB marksheet and passing certificate
  • Latest passport-size photo in formal attire of a lawyer
  • Photo ID proof such as an Aadhaar Card, Passport or PAN Card
  • Self-attested address / residence proof
  • Rent agreement (only for those who live in a rented house in Gujarat and have the signature of their landlord on the copy of the rent agreement)
  • An affidavit justifying the gap between the passing year of a 3-year / 5-year LLB and the year of enrollment in the Bar Council of Gujarat (if any gap is there).

To apply for the AIBE 20 Exam 2025, visit allindiabarexamination.com and click on "New Registration." Enter your name, email ID, mobile number, and enrollment details to generate a registration ID. Log in and complete the application form by filling in personal, educational, and professional details. Upload scanned copies of your photograph, signature, and enrollment certificate. Pay the application fee online using debit/credit card or net banking. Review all details carefully before submitting the form. Finally, download and print the confirmation page for future reference. Ensure all documents meet the prescribed format to avoid rejection.

Q:   Is there minimum qualifying marks in AIBE exam?
A:

Yes, there are minimum qualifying marks in the AIBE exam. To pass the exam, candidates need to score at least 40% marks in total, which means they must answer 40 out of 100 questions correctly. For candidates from the SC/ST category, the minimum required score is reduced to 35% (35 out of 100). The exam is designed to test a candidate's basic knowledge of law, and there is no negative marking, so it's beneficial to attempt all questions.   • Educational Qualification
       - Candidates must have completed a 3-year LLB or 5-year integrated LLB degree from a recognised law institution in India.
       - The law degree must be obtained from a law school or university that is recognised by the BCI
  • Enrollment with State Bar Council

   - Candidates must be enrolled with their respective State Bar Council.
   - They must possess a valid enrollment certificate issued by their State Bar Council.

  • No Minimum Marks Requirement
       - There is no specific minimum percentage of marks required in the qualifying law degree to appear for AIBE.
  • No Age Limit
       - There is no upper or lower age limit for appearing in the AIBE exam.
  • No Limit on Attempts
       - There is no restriction on the number of attempts for AIBE. Candidates can appear for the exam multiple times if they fail in previous attempts.
  • Nationality

   - Only Indian nationals are eligible to appear for the AIBE exam.

Candidates must ensure that they meet these eligibility criteria before applying for AIBE 20.

Q:   What are the minimum passing marks criteria for AIBE, and how can I ensure that I meet the criteria?
A:

The minimum passing marks criteria for AIBE is as follows:

  • General/ OBC category: 40% marks out of 98 (i.e., 38 marks out of 98)
  • SC/ ST category: 35% marks out of 98 (i.e., 34 marks out of 98)

Q:   Can I apply for AIBE exam if I am in final-semester?
A:

The SC has given nod to the final-year law students to appear for AIBE Exam. The Apex Court passed the interim order while hearing a plea challenging the AIBE 20 Eligibility Criteria 2025 announced along with the AIBE 20 Notification 2025. The BCI in its notification earlier restricted the final year students from appearing in AIBE Exam. However, now with Apex court order, final year students will be allowed to appear in the exam. 

Another way to obtain the registration from the Bar Council of Gujarat is to purchase it from the bar council office. The address to the office has been mentioned below.

2. Fill out the form: Now, fill out the application or registration form in block letters (capital letters).
