In pursuit of my dreams: Suraj Singh Mehta

When I was in school, I had no idea what to do with my life. I was raised in a typical Indian family where my parents wanted me to become a doctor or an engineer. But, deep in my heart, I always knew that it was not something I wanted to devote my life to. Like a lost little lamb, I was wandering in the deep woods of this materialistic world in search of a ray of light which would lead me somewhere.

Then one day, a friend of mine mentioned something about mass media. It really intrigued me so I started researching about it. I found a real scope in this field so I decided to give it a go. I felt I had finally found a direction in my life.

It was time to find a good place of learning which would provide me with not just theoretical knowledge of the subject but also the necessary practical experiences for this line of work. Sadly, I come from a small town in Uttarakhand and there are not many opportunities for a mass communication pursuant there. I moved to Delhi in pursuit of my dream to become a journalist.

My first preference for college was IIMC, which is considered the mecca for the budding journalists but I learned that it provides postgraduate courses only. After some stumbling, my search ultimately ended at International Institute of Mass Media-IIMM Delhi. IIMM is a leading mass communication institution for courses in Journalism and Mass Communication with an undergraduate and postgraduate program. It also has a program for Advertising and Public Relations.

The most amazing thing that I witnessed here was most of the faculty members were not only teaching but also were actively involved in the news or media industry. Hence, they often shared their real-life experiences which no textbook could teach us.

Apart from academic sessions, there is also a cultural society called ‘Kalamanthan’ and programs are organized by it every year. Students can show their talents, hidden or otherwise, to the world in various events like theatre performances, dance, debate, film-making and many more. Presently, I am a first-year BJMC student at IIMM and have already learned a lot about the field of work than I could have ever imagined during my school years.

It has been an amazing journey so far and I am working hard towards building my future.
