Indian MBA authors: Do we love them or hate them?

The trend of people grabbing an IIM degree and then quitting their high paying jobs to follow their passion for writing is fast gaining popularity. Last year when Amish, an alumnus of IIM Calcutta, sold more than two million copies of his Shiva Trilogy and raked in an impressive 50 crore rupees got the tongues wagging of many MBA graduates who too decided to quit their super-hectic nine to nine shift jobs and give their creative side a happy nudge.
Over the last decade a string of other MBAs too cut out a market for themselves and their works. The most popular among them being, Chetan Bhagat (alumnus IIT Delhi & IIM Ahmedabad), Ravinder Singh (alumnus from Indian School of Business), Ashwin Sanghi (alumnus Yale School of Management), Rashmi Bansal (alumnus IIM Ahmedabad) and many more. However, are we the readers, really amused with their works? Let us find out and that too objectively.
YES, WE LOVE THEM! Indian MBA authors: Do we love them or hate them?

Most of these MBA authors have a good storyline in place and they manage to target the emotional space of their readers effectively. Books such as the Secret of the Nagas penned by Amish Tripathi and Chanakya Chants by Ashwin Sanghi do manage to keep you on the edge of your seat making you wonder what would happen next (and this most certainly can be said that the author of this article is biased towards these books; because she absolutely loved them). So let’s start with understanding how these MBA students who thought – “Yes! I can. Yes! I too can write” were accepted by the masses.

Storyline one can relate to

Siddharth Awadhoot an avid reader of Durjoy Datta’s books said, “Of Course I Love You..! Till I Find Someone Better..., Now That You're Rich! Let's Fall in Love, She Broke Up, I Didn't! .I Just Kissed Someone Else! and Ohh Yes, I Am Single..! ..And So Is My Girlfriend. These four books are small packets containing all emotions and a lot of entertainment! :)”. He further adds, “Some books don't leave you for a long time after you finish reading them. These are one of them! You don't even need to think twice before buying Durjoy's books, he's a brand now just like Salman Khan! ;) Durjoy Dutta along with his cute co-authors wrote all that happens with every one of us. A lot of people have the same story! He writes what this generation loves to read! I loved all the books and I have read them a lot of times.”

Quick reads

Abhishek Mishra who read Chetan Bhagat’s book - Five Point Someone, some six years back still finds it an interesting read. He says, “I first read it a good six years ago and had loved it. I still like it. It is no literary masterpiece and it would be wrong to compare it with one. It is a dime novel and a good one. It offers a good, quick read - it is a page turner and keeps you hooked till the end.” Sumit Shinde totally agrees with this and goes on to say, “I started reading this book at 10 PM and finished it at 6 in morning and enjoyed reading it a lot. Chetan's one of the best.

Offer a great mix

Jayeeta Bhatta a fan of Ashwin Sanghi’s books said, “The best trait about Sanghi's penmanship is that he makes the readers stay glued to their chairs when his books are in their hands. Me & my brother are having a gala time reading the books. I recommend all book lovers to read it & even to those who do not generally read books very much should also try. The books are great mix of history, culture, literature & thrill.” While most of the MBA authors offer fiction as their main content there are others like Rashmi Bansal who goes on to share her experience in the management industry. Abilash gives her work a five on five and goes on to say, “She toiled out a lot to offer great inspiration and motivation to all entrepreneurs. It helped me a lot in my IIM interviews and i hope it helps in all my future endeavours as well. Those who are not interested in MBA can also read Connect the dots, I have a dream which say that to achieve in business we need dedication, perseverance and social thinking and not necessarily the degree behind ones name”.

Pricing is good

Another thing which works for most of these authors is the intelligent pricing. Almost all the books are priced less than Rs. 200 making it easier for the average middle-class Indians to grab their copy.

NO, SPARE US!

Indian MBA authors: Do we love them or hate them?

So, many people might love their work and stand in never-ending queues to grab their copy. But, mind you! There are even more who at the very least want to demand their money back and warn everyone to not waste their precious time on these books.

Lose their charm

Most of these authors manage to write great first and second books but as they progress they start to lose their charm and in an effort to expand their writing base they tend to miss out on being the writer their readers loved them to be.

Suyash Mishra feels that, “Normally Chetan Bhagat's books are funny. I remember, in almost all his previous books, there would be a line after every few pages that would make me stop reading for a moment and laugh! Revolution 2020 lacks this as well. The story is perpetually depressing, you just keep waiting for ‘good times’ to happen, which seem to be approaching but are stopped by a ridiculous twist. Personally, I didn't like the book at all.”

Confirming the same for Ravinder Singh’s books, Rashmi Jain said, “Do not know what is happening to Indian authors. Books written by new authors such as I too had a love story, Journey of Two Hearts, Fell in love, ops! and similar books are good and people love them such as. However, the second books, thirds, fourths...and further written books are the biggest flops. The question is why and this is because their first books are the true stories, rest are just fake and these authors are not able to survive with fiction”.

Unrealistic Storylines

Jayant Thakur who read Ravinder Singh’s book I too had a love story called it a childish attempt at writing. He further went on to say, “This book is a perfect childish attempt to celebrate writer's imagination & fantasies into so-called 'Heartbreaking Love Tale'. This story doesn't even have a glimpse of realism. It sounded so dull & dry with pathetic clichés of romanticism. I found it utterly boring & predictable. You can’t relate to a single moment”.

Novels are not good but marketing is good

Vikram Khaitan elaborated his feelings on Amish’s books saying, “The Immortals of Meluha is a good attempt for a banker who has been moonlighting for years to write not just a novel but a trilogy to begin with and then show exemplary marketing skills to pump up the sales anyhow to make it sound like a best seller.” He further adds that, “Even as a trilogy the first book fails to convey anything at all. It is a mere prolonged introduction to the second book with an abrupt end. The second book actually drives home some plot of the story. I hope his further books bring out some improvement in the writing skills and the editors don't have to work too hard”.

So in the end we would like to say that some books written by these management students are pure genius, and some others…well let’s not even talk about them. But the truth of the matter is that many of these MBA authors have earned millions through their books and are minting more with every passing day, so something may be going right for them. Whether they are the best or not, we leave that decision for you to make. However, something that we can surely say is that “Love them or hate them but you simply cannot ignore them”.
