Students’ Speak: Marketing is the top domain at Rajagiri Business School Placements 2019-20
By: Bisharah Saeed
Marketing was the most sought after domain during the recently concluded placements at Rajagiri Business School. Bisharah shares the highlights from the placements and tips to ace placements interviews.
Branch wise placements at Rajagiri Business School is slightly biased towards the marketing domain because most of the placement opportunities have in general a connection to the marketing domain. Talking about marketing, very few companies actually offer a proper marketing role. The remaining companies only offer sales-oriented roles to the students. So, if you are into marketing, you don’t have to worry about getting a job in a relevant domain.
Regarding Finance and HR, the placements are relatively low. Out of every five marketing companies, only one or two finance companies visit the campus. Also, these companies do not visit the campus in the beginning of the placement season. They visit in the month of September-October.
For operations and business intelligence, there are very low placement opportunities. In fact, the companies that do visit the campus from these domains offer very low salary packages to the students. Therefore, if you are planning to opt for jobs from either of these domains, the best thing to do is to apply for jobs outside the campus.
Considering the three batches of PGDM—two batches of MBA and one batch of MHRM, the total strength of students is around 350. The percentage of students placed is always 100 per cent, no matter what college brochure you look into. So, what they actually mean is that the students who have appeared for the placements are placed into various companies and sometimes, there may arise situations in which all students might not get placed. Some students may opt for higher studies or some may opt out of placements. As far as I am concerned, I conditionally opted out which means that I am only looking for opportunities in the automotive sector specifically in the manufacturing domain.
Therefore, as I said for the past two years, students who were not placed anywhere are around 20. Last year, Amazon was the company who offered the highest CTC for the students which was around Rs 10 lakh per annum. Goldman Sachs was the next one which offered around Rs 7 lakh per annum. Amazon hired for the operations domain while Goldman Sachs hired for the finance domain. The top companies visiting the campus for placements this year included Goldman Sachs, KPMG, Deloitte, EY, IDBI etc. The salary packages offered by these companies range between Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 7 lakh.
The questions asked during the interview varies from company to company. For example, Goldman Sachs had an aptitude round, a product launch round and an interview while Deloitte had an online test, a GD and an interview round. Deloitte usually asks questions based on our CV so lying about your CV is definitely not an option. Even though your CV may not have much significant details, it is recommended not to fake anything. Obviously, when you are attending an interview in a top company, they might stress you or ask you twisted questions and what we have to do is stay calm and answer those questions logically.
The challenges usually faced during placement includes the difficulty encountered in displaying a clear attitude, communicating fluently in English and staying calm in front of the panel. The college offers practice sessions for improving the overall attitude or you can improve it on your own. Language issues can be sorted out by talking to your friends or practicing with online options over internet. The same can be done for countering anxiety in front of the interview panel.
